Mississippi teens face charges over kidnapped boy found dead Posted: 18 May 2017 05:29 PM PDT The child, Kingston Frazier, was in a Toyota Camry at about 1:15 a.m. CDT (0615 GMT) outside a Kroger store in Jackson while his mother was inside. A Honda Civic drove up and a passenger got out and jumped into the Camry before both cars sped off, Jackson Police Commander Tyree Jones said. Police found the kidnapped boy dead in the back of the abandoned Camry about eight hours later on a rural Madison County road about 10 miles from the store. |
Japan cabinet approves bill allowing emperor's abdication Posted: 19 May 2017 03:57 AM PDT The Japanese government on Friday approved a one-off bill allowing ageing Emperor Akihito to step down from the Chrysanthemum Throne, in the first such abdication in two centuries. The bill is likely to receive swift final approval in parliament, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said after Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's cabinet signed off on the legislation. Abdication must take place within three years of the bill becoming law. |

Mr Patel had arrived in the US on a flight from Quito, Ecuador and was detained on 10 May for allegedly missing proper immigration documents. |

Thousands of AT&T and DirecTV workers are going on strike this weekend Posted: 19 May 2017 12:48 PM PDT On Friday afternoon, thousands of AT&T employees walked off the job in protest of the company's inability to come to an agreement on union contracts with its workforce. Wireless workers from 36 states (and DC) will take part in the strike, along with wireline workers from California, Nevada and Connecticut and DirecTV technicians in California and Nevada. If an agreement can't be reached quickly, retail stores in several states will likely shut down this weekend as well. "We will no longer stand by as AT&T hems and haws at the bargaining table, keeping its own workers from achieving the American Dream they once promised," said Dennis Trainor, Vice President of CWA District 1. "Despite being the largest telecom company in the country with nearly $1 billion a month in profits and the CEO earning $28 million, AT&T continues to pinch its workers' basic needs and stand in the way of high-quality service its customers pay good money for. This is a warning to AT&T: there's only one way out of this now—a fair contract—and we'll settle for nothing less." According to a press release we received this afternoon, AT&T workers are demanding wage increases, improved job security, affordable healthcare and a fair scheduling policy. AT&T employees claim that once the company changed its commission plan, they started taking home less money. Another major point of contention for the workers is the outsourcing of labor. They argue that AT&T is cutting customer service jobs and sacrificing the quality to save money. 12,000 call center jobs in the US have been eliminated since 2011 as AT&T has chosen to instead contract with third-party vendors overseas that supply low-wage workers who aren't subject to much weaker labor protections. The press release states that the AT&T employees will return to work on Monday, but have "vowed to do what they have to do if AT&T violates their rights or an open-ended strike becomes necessary." UPDATE: AT&T provided us with the following statement in regards to the strike: A strike is in no one's best interest, and it's baffling as to why union leadership would call one when we're offering terms in which our employees in these contracts – some of whom average from $115,000 to $148,000 in total compensation – will be better off financially. We're prepared, and we will continue working hard to serve our customers. This involves less than 14 percent of our employees. What's most important is we're all family, whether you're a union member or not. Like any family we have our disagreements but we'll sort them out. We've reached 29 fair agreements since 2015 covering over 128,000 of our employees, and we're confident we can do the same here. |
Iran counts votes after big turnout in presidential election Posted: 19 May 2017 03:24 PM PDT By Parisa Hafezi and Babak Dehghanpisheh DUBAI/BEIRUT (Reuters) - Vote counting began in Iran on Saturday after a high turnout in an unexpectedly tight presidential election pitting President Hassan Rouhani, who wants to normalize ties with the West, against a hardline judge who says he has already gone too far. More than 40 million votes were cast, the interior ministry said, indicating a turnout of about 70 percent in Friday's vote, roughly similar to the showing in 2013 elections when Rouhani swept into office in a landslide victory. Pro-reform news websites said Rouhani was the victor. |

Pit bull on the brink of euthanasia gets second chance as a police dog instead Posted: 19 May 2017 12:40 PM PDT Here's your daily reminder that dogs are amazing creatures. Leonard, a pit bull who had been put on the euthanasia list due to aggressive behavior, is set to become Ohio's first pit bull police dog. According to local ABC news, Leonard was brought to Union County Humane Society where staff members found Leonard's behavior too aggressive for adoption. This meant the next stop for Leonard would be euthanasia. SEE ALSO: Adorable pup loses a shocking 80 pounds and is now living his best life Fortunately, shelter director Jim Alloway — who has a background in working with police dogs — saw potential in Leonard. "I walked out with a squegee. He ran up and bit it and then he went running through the yard. I knew it was a special characteristic. He wasn't being aggressive. He wanted to play," Alloway told ABC news. Leonard was sent to be trained by Storm Dog Tactical, an organization that specializes in training dogs for K9 police units. Now that he's been fully trained, he's ready for certification as official police material. Leonard is set to start his new job this weekend, and we couldn't be more proud. Israel minister's Jerusalem dress sparks online storm Posted: 18 May 2017 08:24 AM PDT Israeli Culture Minister Miri Regev triggered a social media storm on Thursday after she attended the Cannes film festival in an evening dress featuring a Jerusalem Islamic shrine. Several tweets altered what one called the "provocative" garment which shows a panorama of the walled Old City in Israeli-occupied east Jerusalem, including the Dome of the Rock, located in the flashpoint Al-Aqsa mosque compound. One tweet redesigns the dress to show a nightime scene of the Old City with fireworks bursting overhead and no sign of the Dome of the Rock. |

Billionaire Betsy DeVos wants to scrap student debt forgiveness. Surprised? | Jamie Peck Posted: 19 May 2017 10:38 AM PDT When Donald Trump appointed Betsy DeVos secretary of education, America's school-going people worried it was only a matter of time before she brought back debtors' prison for student loan defaulters and subcontracted out K-12 education to Nickelodeon. Now Donald and Betsy are one step closer to making that vision a reality, with $10.6bn in cuts to crucial education programs, including a student loan forgiveness program first implemented by a Republican administration. According to budget documents obtained by the Washington Post, the Trump administration plans to end the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program, which more than 400,000 people are counting on as part of their financial future. |

Puerto Rico retirees will get bankruptcy committee: U.S. Trustee Posted: 19 May 2017 01:10 PM PDT By Nick Brown NEW YORK (Reuters) - The U.S. Department of Justice's bankruptcy watchdog said on Friday it plans to appoint a committee of retirees in Puerto Rico's bankruptcy to negotiate for pensioners facing benefit cuts as part of the island's debt restructuring. Puerto Rico, carrying some $50 billion in unfunded pension liabilities, "clearly needs a retiree committee and sooner rather than later," the office of the U.S. Trustee said in a filing in federal court in San Juan. Puerto Rico filed the biggest municipal bankruptcy in U.S. history earlier this month. |

Russia condemned the strike as "illegitimate" and said it could harm efforts to fight Islamic State group (IS) jihadists. In addition to a number of sexual abuse allegations, the network is also facing a racial discrimination lawsuit brought by 23 current and former employees. The lawyers handling the race case, Douglas Wigdor and Jeanne Christense, said Mr Beckel was fired because of an offensive comment he made to a black IT technician who came to service his computer earlier this week. |

Venezuela Supreme Court judges hit with U.S. sanctions Posted: 18 May 2017 05:59 PM PDT By Patricia Zengerle and Matt Spetalnick WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Trump administration imposed sanctions on the chief judge and seven other members of Venezuela's Supreme Court on Thursday as punishment for annulling the opposition-led Congress earlier this year, U.S. officials said. The new sanctions package was aimed at stepping up pressure on the leftist government of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his loyalists amid growing concern over a crackdown on street protests and his efforts to consolidate his rule over the South American oil-producing country. The move provoked condemnation from Venezuelan Foreign Minister Delcy Rodriguez. |
China urges S.Korea to 'remove obstacles' to good ties Posted: 18 May 2017 03:07 AM PDT China's foreign minister urged South Korea's new government on Thursday to remove "obstacles" to good relations amid Chinese anger at the US deployment of an anti-missile system on the Korean peninsula. Greeting South Korean presidential envoy Lee Hae-Chan in Beijing, Foreign Minister Wang Yi said bilateral relations have made immense progress over the years. "But this year we've had some undeserved setbacks," Wang said, likely in a veiled reference to the Terminal High Altitude Area Defence (THAAD) system that became operational earlier this month. |

All the Trump insanity you missed while you were sleeping last night Posted: 18 May 2017 07:33 AM PDT As chaotic as the first one hundred days of Trump's presidency were, revelations of wrongdoing and misconduct have been coming out at a breakneck speed over the past two weeks. We can hardly go an hour without another baffling admission from the Trump administration or a bombshell report from the media, which is why we can't blame you if you've given up on trying to keep up with it all. But for those of you who don't want to be out of the loop, we've rounded up every Trump, Flynn, Russia and Comey story from the last 12 hours or so below, just so you don't have to go searching for them all.
Michael Flynn advised on military decisions while accepting money from TurkeyDonald Trump made plenty of promises while on the campaign trail, but few were made more emphatically than his guarantee to wipe out ISIS and protect the American people. As difficult of a task as that is, it's even more difficult when your national security adviser is helping you make decisions while taking hundreds of thousands of dollars from foreign governments [via McClatchy]:
Trump's transition team knew Flynn was under investigation in JanuaryWhat did they know, and when did they know it? Those are the questions that we keep asking about the Trump administration on a variety of topics, but the answers seem to change on a weekly basis. According to the New York Times, Flynn's lawyer told the Trump team that his client was under federal investigation on January 1st -- weeks before the inauguration. This was also weeks before acting attorney general Sally Yates warned the White House that Flynn might be vulnerable to Russian blackmail due to him misleading Vice President Pence about his contacts with Russia:
Trump advisers contacted Russian officials at least 18 timesIn an exclusive report on Thursday morning, Reuters cited former and current US officials who claim that Flynn and other Trump campaign advisers were in contact with Russian officials "in at least 18 calls and emails during the last seven months of the 2016 presidential race." Six of the undisclosed contacts were phone calls between Russia's US ambassador Sergei Kislyak and Trump's advisers.
Kushner wanted Trump to fight back against the special counselOn Wednesday evening, amid mounting pressure from the American public, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein appointed former FBI director Robert Mueller as a special counsel to oversee the Justice Department's investigation into Russia's meddling in the 2016 US presidential election. A New York Times report reveals that Trump was calm but defiant when he heard the news, wanting to know how he could "fight back." He called on his staff to help him make a decision, and while most told him to release a statement accepting the decision, Jared Kushner apparently had other ideas:
GOP House Majority Leader thinks Putin is paying Donald TrumpOf all the stories to come out last night, this was perhaps the strangest. The Washington Post was made privy to a recording of a private conversation from June 15th, 2016 between GOP leaders in which House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy asserted that Donald Trump was on the Kremlin payroll. Paul Ryan immediately interjected and told everyone present to keep the conversation private:

Venezuela sends 2,000 troops to state hit by looting, protests Posted: 17 May 2017 05:53 PM PDT By Anggy Polanco SAN CRISTOBAL, Venezuela (Reuters) - Venezuela said it was sending 2,000 soldiers on Wednesday to a border state that is a hotspot of anti-government radicalism after looting that killed a 15-year-old in the latest unrest roiling the nation. Most shops and businesses in San Cristobal, capital of Tachira state on the Colombian border, were closed and guarded by soldiers on Wednesday, though looting continued in some poorer sectors, residents said. People made off with items including coffee, diapers, and cooking oil in the OPEC nation where a brutal economic crisis has made basic foods and medicine disappear from shelves. |

At the Justice Department he was known as Bobby Three Sticks, a playful allusion to his patrician name, and, some say, to the three-fingered Boy Scout salute. He started as FBI director a week before 9/11, and oversaw the remaking of the bureau into an intelligence and counter-terrorism organization, charged with preventing new attacks as well as arresting the perpetrators. |
Trump's first foreign trip is already a disaster and it hasn't even started Posted: 18 May 2017 12:45 PM PDT Donald Trump's first foreign trip as president doesn't start until Friday, but it's already suffered a few setbacks. He's supposed to stop in Israel during his four-country, nine-day trip. But already his plan to visit and give a speech atop the ancient mountaintop fortress of Masada has been scrapped. Why? Because he won't be allowed to land his helicopter on the site, Newsweek reported. SEE ALSO: Trump plans to do a live Twitter forum in Saudi Arabia. But really. The UNESCO World Heritage site can be damaged so landings are banned. Trump was set to take a cable car to the top, as visiting U.S. presidents before him have done, like George W. Bush in 2008 and Bill Clinton in 1998, according to the Jerusalem Post. But Trump doesn't do cable cars apparently, so the Masada visit is canceled and instead he's speaking at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem, according to Newsweek. McMaster Planned speech Trump at Masada has been struck from the itinerary. @WhiteHouse spokesman as due to it being "too hot" there. pic.twitter.com/b5jvwhuGmN — Hans Posthumus (@Tuinier) May 17, 2017 Also while in Israel, local media was reporting complicated logistical details including only 15 minutes allotted for Trump's visit to Yad Vashem, the Holocaust Remembrance Museum in Jerusalem. Apparently this is enough time for a quick talk and to sign the guest book. As the Jewish news publication Forward asked, "Is 15 minutes enough time for Trump at Yad Vashem?" Another opportunity with lots of terrible potential is a speech Trump is planning to give about radical Islam in Saudi Arabia. The speech writer is none other than his policy adviser Stephen Miller. He's credited as one of the chief architects of Trump's failed travel ban to keep people from Muslim-majority nations out of the U.S. He also has a strong history of anti-Muslim rhetoric and beliefs. Stephen Miller wrote Trump's Islam speech. What could possibly go wrong? — John Paul Keith (@johnpaulkeith) May 17, 2017 "Let's have Stephen Miller draft Trump's speech to the Muslim world" sums up the problems with this Administration's decision making. — Steve Zissou (@SteveZiss0u) May 17, 2017 Also joining Trump overseas is first lady Melania Trump. We haven't seen the Trumps together in a long time, so this will be ... exciting. Melania is joining @realDonaldTrump on his foreign trip: "I am very excited...," @FLOTUS said in a statement — Nolan D. McCaskill (@NolanDMcCaskill) May 18, 2017 Topping this all off is the fact that Trump doesn't even want to go on the trip. The New York Times reported that he thinks the trip is too long and he doesn't want to be away from a familiar setting — and his own bed. His aides are apparently freaking out about the president going off script, walking into unfamiliar territory or making promises to foreign leaders that he can't keep. A former national security adviser to George W. Bush said for relationship-building overseas trips like Trump's, "You really hope that he sticks to the script, executes the trip as planned and avoids distractions, because the whole world is watching." Welp, it's not like Trump ever spontaneously says offensive things or gets distracted, so, um, this should end well. WATCH: There may be a new solution to the ocean trash problem |
