Japan clears way for first emperor abdication in over 200 years Posted: 08 Jun 2017 07:20 PM PDT Japan's parliament passed a law Friday that clears the way for its ageing Emperor Akihito to step down, in what would be the first imperial abdication in more than two centuries. The abdication must take place within three years of the new law taking effect or it expires -- and it only applies to Akihito. The status of the emperor is sensitive in Japan given its 20th century history of war waged in the name of Akihito's father Hirohito, who died in 1989. |
Up to 1 in 20 babies born to mothers with Zika have birth defects, report says Posted: 08 Jun 2017 12:15 PM PDT The Zika virus is still spreading locally in some areas, including Puerto Rico. As many as one in 20 babies born to mothers infected by Zika have birth defects, a new report from by US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows. The risk jumped to nearly one in 13 when mothers were found to have Zika in the first trimester, the CDC stated. |

Earn minimum wage in the US? You can afford to live in exactly 12 counties Posted: 08 Jun 2017 11:03 AM PDT A person working a full-time minimum-wage job will find it virtually impossible to rent an affordable home anywhere in the US, according to a study that sheds new light the country's housing crisis. The report reveals that there is not a single county or metropolitan area in which a minimum-wage worker can afford a modest two-bedroom home, which the federal government defines as paying less than 30% of a household's income for rent and utilities. This applies even in places that have raised their minimum wage higher than the baseline federal level of $7.25, which equates to around $15,000 a year. |

United's latest headache: gay father claims wrongful detainment after flight Posted: 09 Jun 2017 10:24 AM PDT A gay North Carolina dad is pursuing legal action against United Airlines, claiming he was detained after a mid-May flight by attendants and crew who wrongfully accused him of sexually abusing his son. Henry Amador-Batten, 53, says he and his five-year-old son were returning from Puerto Rico, where they visited his ailing father. After landing in Raleigh-Durham, Amador-Batten says he was detained by officers upon exiting the plane. |

Theresa May: The leader who gambled and lost Posted: 09 Jun 2017 11:14 AM PDT Prime Minister Theresa May presented herself as a stable leader to take Britain through Brexit, but her gamble on an election backfired and has left her deeply wounded. The Conservative leader refused to resign after losing her party's parliamentary majority in Thursday's vote, but has suffered a humiliation from which she will struggle to recover. "It is clear that this election has left her authority deeply wounded, perhaps fatally," said Paul Goodman, a former lawmaker and editor of the ConservativeHome website. |

Elon Musk goes full Trump to defend Tesla’s fake founding myth Posted: 09 Jun 2017 12:31 PM PDT With Tesla doing so well these days, it's sometimes difficult to remember where the company was at 10 years ago. Elon Musk and Tesla have become as one in the minds of the public, but the quiet truth is that Musk wasn't a founder of Tesla in a technical sense. Malcolm Smith and Martin Eberhard were the two Silicon Valley engineers who first came up with the idea of building an electric car that didn't suck. They came up with the name, the car concept, and founded the company. Musk came on board as an early investor and eventually took over in 2008 as CEO, but that's not the story that Musk wants to be remembered.
In a seemingly unprompted move, Musk took to Twitter today to rehash Tesla's origins story: https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/873117697420034048 https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/873121068172460035 What Musk is talking about is GM's failed EV-1 program. In the early 2000s, GM made an all-electric car with the battery tech available at the time -- basically high-performance versions of regular 12V car batteries. The cars worked but barely sold, and GM quickly realized that it didn't want to maintain the complicated vehicles long-term. The cars were only ever leased, not sold, which meant that GM could (and did) repossess the cars from buyers. It's a nice story, but it also doesn't have much to do with Tesla. The inspiration for the founding of Tesla and the development of the Roadster, as told by the co-founders of Tesla in an interview years ago, was the desire to build a non-sucky electric car based on technology developed by a startup called AC Propulsions. Smith and Eberhard started Tesla, and intended to take the tech from AC Propulsions (which had a working prototype of the drivetrain and battery systems necessary to build the Roadster), marry it with a chassis and body based on the Lotus Elise, and sell it for $100,000. Musk liked the idea and came on board as the lead investor, but according to every record apart from Musk's Twitter, GM wasn't the inspiration, and Musk wasn't a founder. Eberhard's departure from Tesla, eventually to be replaced by Musk, is a well-documented and bitter fight that ended in lawsuits. Details about exactly what happened are still murky, but there's enough evidence on the public record -- including a bunch of documents that list Musk as the Chairman, rather than Co-Founder -- that it's weird that Musk feels the need to re-litigate the issue on Twitter with a bunch of false claims. |
Qatar won't back down in face of pressure: minister Posted: 08 Jun 2017 12:33 PM PDT Far from backing down in the face of unprecedented pressure from Gulf rivals, Qatar's foreign minister said Thursday that no other country could determine its policies. In an interview with AFP, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani described as an attempt at "collective punishment" a decision by Saudi Arabia and its allies to cut ties with Qatar over alleged financing of extremist groups. Qatar would not yield to it, he said. |

Coalition strikes 'kill 17 civilians' as battle for Raqa rages Posted: 08 Jun 2017 05:09 PM PDT An international coalition pounded Raqa with air strikes Thursday, with a monitor saying at least 17 civilians had been killed in the bombardment as US-backed fighters pushed further into the Islamic State group's Syrian bastion. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said US-led coalition forces had hit the city and its suburbs with at least 25 strikes, warning that dozens had been injured and the death toll could rise. The air strikes came after US-backed fighters with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) battled deeper into Raqa, two days after finally entering following a months-long struggle to surround a city that has become synonymous with IS atrocities since its capture by the jihadists in 2014. |

Police dog too friendly for the force gets an adorable new job Posted: 08 Jun 2017 07:12 PM PDT If you want to be a police dog, you've gotta be a bit tough. Gavel, a German Shepherd from Queensland, Australia, isn't. He was ruled too sociable for the frontline by police trainers, and was let go from the training program while he was being fostered at the official residence of the Queensland governor. SEE ALSO: Good dog's TV watching ritual is so freaking adorable Left wondering what to do with the pooch, staff decided to give him a new job as a vice-regal dog, which was made official in February this year. "He has outgrown four ceremonial coats, undergone a career change (his official title is now Gavel VRD, 'Vice-Regal Dog'), and brought untold joy to the lives of the governor, Mrs de Jersey, Government House staff, and the thousands of Queenslanders who have since visited the estate," the office of Governor Paul de Jersey told the BBC. Gavel now spends his time attending functions and welcoming guests to Queensland's Government House, sporting his very own official ceremonial coat bearing the state's coat of arms. Southwest Airlines is offering one-way flights for as low as $49 today Posted: 08 Jun 2017 11:58 AM PDT Let's not beat around the bush here: it's been one heck of a week. Between Apple's WWDC announcements, the continued rumor flood of future OnePlus and Samsung devices, and the little matter of the former FBI director testifying in front of Congress regarding potential wrongdoing by the President of the United States, you might just want to kind of get away. Southwest Airlines is offering a deal that will help you do just that, and for a ridiculously low price of just $49.
Southwest's current promotion — which ends today, June 8th — includes flights to and from select cities for as cheap as just $49. Want to fly from El Paso, TX, to Los Angeles? Or from Houston to Memphis? How about Minneapolis to St. Louis? Those are just a few of the dozens and dozens of flights you can score for less than a fifty-spot. There are lots of other discounted flights on offer, both to and from over 100 US cities, with most of the fares going for well under $100. All of these ultra-cheap flights booked via Southwest today can be taken from August 22nd through December 13th, so if you have any trips planned between now and the end of the year, this could help you save some serious cash. Of course, there's a bit of fine print with these discounted flights, including that the prices aren't valid on Fridays or Sundays, which is a bit of a bummer. Still, it's hard to turn your nose up a $49 flights. |

Heavy US-led strikes as fighters battle IS in Syria's Raqa Posted: 09 Jun 2017 04:36 AM PDT US-led coalition forces launched heavy raids into Friday morning in support of Syrian fighters battling to oust the Islamic State group from its bastion of Raqa, a monitor said. The Kurdish-Arab alliance known as the Syrian Democratic Forces broke into Raqa city's east earlier this week, months after they launched an operation to capture the jihadist stronghold. On Thursday night, the US-led coalition backing the SDF launched 25 air strikes on Raqa city and its outskirts, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitor said. |

Verizon finalizes Yahoo acquisition, instantly starts laying people off Posted: 08 Jun 2017 11:34 AM PDT In a vote today, Yahoo's stockholders formally approved the sale of sad former internet company Yahoo to telecoms giant Verizon. The sale values Yahoo at about $4.5 billion, a price that was reduced by hundreds of millions in February, after details of a major Yahoo security breach leaked. As the vote took place today, details also leaked out about staff reductions that Verizon is imposing on its new acquisition. Around 2,100 positions are reportedly being cut across Yahoo and AOL, the current Verizon subsidiary that Yahoo is being merged with.
Verizon's post-acquisition plan for Yahoo is to merge it with AOL, which these days is mostly a media company. The combined monstrosity will be called "Oath," presumably because Verizon has realized that neither AOL nor Yahoo are particularly well-regarded brands these days. Oath may be an attempt to imply security and reliability, something that Yahoo is not known for after hundreds of millions of customer accounts were hacked. The job losses account for around 15% of Yahoo and AOL's workforce, and will reportedly be applied across the globe. Some of those positions will be duplicate roles in finance, HR, and other admin departments, but cuts to editorial and product teams are also possible. In unrelated news, Yahoo also voted today to approve the final compensation for its executive team. Marissa Mayer, Yahoo's outgoing CEO, stands to make $186 million from the sale. During her five-year tenure as CEO, she made a number of dubious moves, like a $1.1-billion acquisition of Tumblr and paying a teenager $30 million for an app with no underlying technology or code. |
