CBO score could roil Senate health care negotiations Posted: 23 May 2017 01:38 PM PDT The Congressional Budget Office will release its prediction of the effects of the House-passed health care overhaul Wednesday afternoon, potentially stirring up more dissent among Senate Republicans who have spent much of this month attempting to hash out their own health care deal. The CBO will likely deliver a similar verdict for the American Health Care Act (AHCA) as it did for an earlier version of the House bill, which the office said would result in 24 million fewer Americans having health care coverage and $150 billion in deficit reduction over 10 years compared with Obamacare. |

S. Korea tourist numbers hammered by China boycott Posted: 22 May 2017 09:34 PM PDT Chinese tourist numbers to South Korea plunged by two-thirds in April after Beijing banned tour groups over Seoul's deployment of a US missile defence system, official statistics showed. Beijing imposed a boycott from March 15 on Chinese tour groups visiting the South in a spat over the US Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system. Washington and Seoul say it is purely to defend against threats from nuclear-armed North Korea, but Beijing fears it could undermine its own nuclear deterrent and has reacted with fury, imposing a series of measures seen as economic retaliation. |

Four climbers found dead in tents on Everest, identities unknown Posted: 24 May 2017 07:06 AM PDT By Gopal Sharma KATHMANDU (Reuters) - Nepali sherpas have found four climbers dead in their tents on Mount Everest, officials said on Wednesday, taking the death toll on the world's highest mountain to 10 in the past month. The climbers were found overnight in two tents at Camp Four, at 8,000 meters (26,246 feet), Mingma Sherpa of the Seven Summit Treks group, to which the sherpas belonged, said. |
Massive slide buries stretch of iconic California highway Posted: 23 May 2017 05:19 PM PDT A massive rockslide has buried a stretch of California's iconic seaside Highway 1 which had already been hit by a number of road closures caused by severe winter storms, state transportation officials said Tuesday. The slide on one of America's most picturesque highways took place on Saturday morning in a remote and largely uninhabited area known as Mud Creek. The road in that section of the highway had already been shut down before a million tons of earth came tumbling down from a hillside, burying a 1,500-foot (nearly half a kilometer) section of the highway, said Jim Shivers, a spokesman for the state's transportation agency. |

Retirement Savings Is a Bigger Crisis Than Health Care Posted: 24 May 2017 07:12 AM PDT Everyone talks about how health care is the biggest crisis facing retirees, but unfortunately that crisis takes a distant second to another, far more serious issue. A 2015 National Institute on Retirement Security study found that the median working-age household has just $14,500 in retirement savings -- woefully short of the hundreds of thousands in savings truly needed to retire in the first place. One of the authors of the 2015 NIRS study, Ilana Boivie, agrees that the $14,500 figure is startlingly low. |
The Pope gave Donald Trump a 192-page letter he wrote on climate change Posted: 24 May 2017 02:58 PM PDT Donald Trump was given a gift during his meeting with Pope Francis at the Vatican: a papal letter detailing why the world should fight against climate change. Pope Francis issued the encyclical in 2015, just months before nearly 200 countries signed the historic Paris Agreement on climate change. The agreement is considered a large part of President Obama's legacy, particularly his work on environmental issues like establishing a protected national park in Hawaii and passing legislation on clean energy. |

After Maryland student's speech, mockery and anger in China Posted: 24 May 2017 03:21 AM PDT When Chinese student Yang Shuping described how she ditched her five pollution masks upon discovering the "oddly luxurious" air of the United States, she drew a fierce online backlash, indignant newspaper columns and even a rebuttal from her hometown. On Wednesday, the official Xinhua news agency's English-language Twitter account broadcast a live-stream from Kunming, with two reporters interviewing passersby about air quality and whether they wore pollution masks. China's foreign ministry also weighed in, saying it was aware the issue was being widely discussed online, and that any Chinese citizen should "make remarks responsibly". |

Newark airport reopens after engine fire prompts plane evacuation Posted: 23 May 2017 09:24 PM PDT Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey has reopened after temporarily shutting down late Tuesday, following an engine fire that prompted the evacuation of an airplane, officials said. There were reports of five minor injuries, according to a statement posted on the airport's official Twitter account, with delays expected to persist through the night. "Newark Airport is temporarily closed due to deployment of emergency chutes on a plane with an apparent engine fire," an earlier post on the airport's official Twitter account had said. |

Posted: 23 May 2017 11:05 AM PDT President Trump leaves the Middle East today, having done his bit to make the region even more divided and mired in conflict than it was before. At the same moment that Donald Trump was condemning the suicide bomber in Manchester as "an evil loser in life", he was adding to the chaos in which al-Qaeda and Isis have taken root and flourished. It may be a long distance between the massacre in Manchester and the wars in the Middle East, but the connection is there. |

Venezuela prosecutor decries Maduro plan, unrest worsens Posted: 22 May 2017 06:23 PM PDT By Alexandra Ulmer and Maria Ramirez CARACAS/PUERTO ORDAZ, Venezuela (Reuters) - Venezuela's state prosecutor has panned unpopular President Nicolas Maduro's plan to create a grassroots congress, deepening a rare public split among the ruling Socialists as the death toll from two months of unrest hit 51. Chief State Prosecutor Luisa Ortega stunned the crisis-hit country in March when she lambasted the Supreme Court for annulling the powers of the opposition-led National Assembly. Since then, she has been a wild card within the publicly homogenous Venezuelan government, whose foes accuse it of seeking to dodge elections by creating a parallel assembly with powers to rewrite the constitution. |

Korea Posted: 23 May 2017 02:56 AM PDT South Korea fired warning shots Tuesday at a flying object that entered the country's airspace from North Korea across the Demilitarized Zone, Seoul's military said. One official told AFP it appeared to be a drone. The official gave no details, but previous drones flown across the border have been similar in size to hobby craft. |

The U.S. Justice Department lawsuit, filed in U.S. District court in Detroit, is a procedural step that may ramp up pressure on Fiat Chrysler and comes amid growing scrutiny of diesels by regulators around the world. Qatar probes 'shameful' hacking as Gulf split exposed Posted: 24 May 2017 08:39 AM PDT Qatar launched an investigation and went into damage control mode on Wednesday after accusing hackers of putting what it called false remarks by the emir on state media. The four-hour cyber attack, which hit the Qatar News Agency's website and Twitter account, caused ripples in the Gulf state and across the Middle East because of the content of the stories. There were also remarks about alleged "tensions" between Qatar and the administration of US President Donald Trump. |
Syrian army says senior Islamic State militant killed Posted: 24 May 2017 04:57 AM PDT The Syrian army said on Wednesday it had killed Islamic State's military commander in Syria during operations in the north of the country, where the Russian-backed government forces are seizing more territory back from the jihadist group. If confirmed, this would represent a major blow against Islamic State (IS) ahead of an attack which the U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) - an alliance of Kurdish and Arab fighters - are expected to launch against the jihadists in their stronghold of Raqqa city. A Syrian military source told Reuters the IS commander, Abu Musab al-Masri, had been the group's "minister of war" for Syria. |

The 52-year-old's campaign focused on overhauling the UN health agency after its much-criticised handling of the west African Ebola epidemic, and speculation that the United States might cut its funding for the agency. "We live in a changing world, and the WHO must be able to change with it," Tedros said in his vision statement, citing new health threats brought about through globalisation, climate change and unhealthy lifestyles. |

Jeff Sessions in KKK robe image projected onto Justice Department headquarters Posted: 23 May 2017 10:32 AM PDT Stunning visuals depicting Attorney General Jeff Sessions in a Ku Klux Klan robe have been projected onto iconic Washington buildings including the Department of Justice building. The projections, created by activist and artist Robin Bell, showed Mr Sessions with the infamous white hood alongside some of his past statements that have been pointed to as insensitive to racist struggles. "I thought the KKK was OK until I learned that they smoked pot," one of the projections reads, a close approximation to a comment Mr Sessions made while investigating a case against Klansmen as a US attorney in Alabama in the 1980s. |
Fear and disbelief at Manchester bomber's mosque Posted: 24 May 2017 10:14 AM PDT Worshippers at the mosque that the Manchester suicide bomber is believed to have frequented reacted with disbelief on Wednesday and pointed the finger at online radicalisation. Elders at the Didsbury mosque, a Victorian former Methodist chapel, also voiced concern about reports of Islamophobic attacks since the bombing at a pop concert which killed 22 people. "The horrific atrocity that occurred in Manchester on Monday night shocked us all. |
