Jack Burkman, Jacob Wohl Charged in Alleged Voter Suppression Scheme

Posted: 01 Oct 2020 02:23 PM PDT

Jack Burkman, Jacob Wohl Charged in Alleged Voter Suppression SchemeConservative operatives Jacob Wohl and Jack Burkman were charged on Thursday for allegedly orchestrating a series of robocalls aimed at suppressing the vote in the November presidential election, Michigan authorities said. Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel filed a slew of charges against Burkman, 54, and Wohl, 22, including conspiracy to commit an election law violation and using a computer to commit the crime of election law - intimidating voters. Prosecutors allege the two political operatives were using a robocall system aimed at scaring Detroit voters away from using mail-in voting ballots. The calls, which were made in August, went out to nearly 12,000 Detroit residents. Both Wohl and Burkman face four felony counts and a maximum sentence of 7 years in prison. The voice on the call attributed to Wohl and Burkman attempts to trick listeners into not sending in mail-in ballots, falsely warning that the information would be used to track fugitives, collect on credit card debts, and enforce "mandatory vaccines." The calls also told residents to "beware of vote by mail.""Don't be BS'ed into giving your private information to the man," the call continued. "Stay safe and beware of vote-by-mail." Wohl and Burkman didn't respond to immediate requests for comment. In August, Burkman denied being behind the robocall, claiming it was suspicious that it was connected to his personal cell phone number."No one in their right mind would put their own cell on a robocall," Burkman told The Daily Beast.Sealed Docs: FBI Investigating Jacob Wohl Over Roger Stone Trial Leaks"Any effort to interfere with, intimidate or intentionally mislead Michigan voters will be met with swift and severe consequences," Nessel said. "This effort specifically targeted minority voters in an attempt to deter them from voting in the November election. We're all well aware of the frustrations caused by the millions of nuisance robocalls flooding our cell phones and landlines each day, but this particular message poses grave consequences for our democracy and the principles upon which it was built. Michigan voters are entitled to a full, free and fair election in November and my office will not hesitate to pursue those who jeopardize that."The attorney general's office added that during the investigation into the robocalls, investigators communicated with officials in New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Illinois—all of whom reported similar robocalls being made to residents in their states. All the calls, they said, were made to residents in "urban areas with significant minority populations," the Michigan attorney general's office said."It's believed around 85,000 calls were made nationally, though an exact breakdown of the numbers of calls to each city or state are not available," the AG's office said. Nessel also encouraged anyone who received such a robocall to file a complaint with her office. The Michigan charges aren't the only legal charges facing the pair. Wohl has been charged with two felonies over alleged violations of California securities law. On Saturday, The Daily Beast reported on a secret FBI investigation into Wohl and Burkman over the leak of confidential juror questionnaires and grand jury testimony in the trial of Trump associate Roger Stone.Wohl and Burkman became notorious online in 2018, after a failed attempt to manufacture a sexual assault allegation against Robert Mueller collapsed in spectacular fashion. Since then, they have tried to create hoaxes against other Trump opponents, but the schemes always fail almost immediately, often due to Wohl and Burkman's own errors. The duo have not yet been arrested, according to a press release from the Michigan attorney general. But the release noted that the agency will work with "local enforcement" if the two don't turn themselves in.Read more at The Daily Beast.Got a tip? New Caledonia to vote on independence from France

New Caledonia to vote on independence from FranceVoters in New Caledonia, a French archipelago in the South Pacific, will choose whether they want independence from France in a referendum that marks a milestone in a three-decade decolonization effort. Sunday's vote is key to determining the future of the archipelago east of Australia and its 270,000 inhabitants, including both native Kanaks, who once suffered from strict segregation policies, and descendants of European colonizers. No opinion polls have been released, but two years ago, 56.4% of voters who participated in a similar referendum chose to keep ties with Paris — 16,000 kilometers (10,000 miles) and nine times zones away — instead of backing independence.

Attorney General Releases Audio Recording of Breonna Taylor Grand Jury Proceedings

Posted: 02 Oct 2020 08:51 AM PDT

Attorney General Releases Audio Recording of Breonna Taylor Grand Jury ProceedingsThe Kentucky Attorney General's Office on Friday released roughly 20 hours of audio from proceedings by a grand jury that ultimately decided not to charge the three officers involved in Breonna Taylor's fatal shooting with her death.Kentucky AG Daniel Cameron was ordered by a judge to take the extraordinarily unusual step of releasing the grand jury recording, a process that is typically kept secret, after an unidentified juror filed a motion requesting the release of all information in Taylor's case—stating "certain questions were left unanswered.""The grand jury is meant to be a secretive body. It's apparent that the public interest, in this case, isn't going to allow that to happen," Cameron said. The grand jury made the stunning decision last week to indict just one officer, Brett Hankison, for recklessly firing shots that endangered people in other apartments. Mattingly and Cosgrove—the latter the cop who fired the shot that killed Taylor—weren't charged. Cameron has said they were "justified to protect themselves.""Do we really want the truth, or do we want a truth that fits our narrative?" Cameron said last week amid outrage over the grand jury decision.Sole Witness Who Heard Cops Announce Themselves in Breonna Taylor Raid Changed His StoryHowever, in the days since, questions have emerged about the narrative that was presented to the grand jury. Cameron revealed last week that the only charge recommended to the grand jury was wanton endangerment, despite previously stating that he'd talked to jurors about "every homicide offense, and also presented all of the information that was available."Cameron had also said a witness confirmed the three officers' account that they announced their presence before entering Taylor's home. However, according to documents and audio obtained by Vice News on Saturday, that sole witness initially told investigators he didn't hear police announce themselves. Two months later, he changed his story.Taylor's boyfriend, Kenny Walker, and 11 other residents who lived in the 26-year-old's Louisville apartment building, all said they didn't hear the cops announce themselves. Walker said he thought he was being burglarized and fired a warning shot that triggered the tragic chain of events.A Kentucky State ballistics report obtained by Vice and several other outlets also showed an inconsistency in Cameron's assertion that Walker shot Mattingly in the thigh—which prompted the officers to return fire with up to 20 shots. Cameron said investigators had ruled out "friendly fire" as the source of the shot, but the KSP report said that "due to limited markings of comparative value," the 9mm bullet that hit Mattingly was neither "identified nor eliminated as having been fired" by Walker's gun.During a news conference on Tuesday, the lawyer for the grand juror stressed that truth and transparency are essential for a case that has become one of the most talked about in the country.Lonita Baker, an attorney for Taylor's family, applauded the "brave" juror and said the "public deserves better than the word games Daniel Cameron is playing to avoid telling the full truth.""Reading between the lines, it is obvious that Daniel Cameron lied to Tamika Palmer, the citizens of Kentucky, and the world when he said the grand jury agreed that Officers Mattingly and Cosgrove were justified to kill Breonna."Read more at The Daily Beast.Got a tip? EU launches legal case against UK over Internal Market BillThe European Union on Thursday launched legal action against Britain's new Internal Market Bill on the grounds that it undercuts London's earlier legal commitments under its Brexit divorce treaty, the head of the bloc's executive said. Such so-called infringements could lead to hefty fines being imposed by the EU's top court but that takes years, leaving plenty of time for the UK to change tack. London now has one month now to reply to a formal letter of complaint from the Commission, which will then assess whether the answer is satisfactory and can then request that the UK falls back in line.
