Ex-New York Senate leader corruptly helped son get paid, jury told Posted: 17 Nov 2015 02:41 PM PST A former leader of the New York state Senate strong-armed three companies to pay his son over $300,000, knowing that his position to influence policy crucial to their businesses meant "they couldn't say no," a federal prosecutor said on Tuesday. Dean Skelos, a Republican, sought to corruptly direct commissions and jobs to his son, Adam, to "line the pockets of the Skelos family," prosecutor Tatiana Martins said at the start of their trial in Manhattan federal court. FanDuel stops letting New Yorkers play paid games Posted: 17 Nov 2015 11:43 AM PST Daily fantasy sports site FanDuel said on Tuesday it would no longer let people in New York enter its paid contests in response to efforts by the state's attorney general to declare the games illegal gambling. New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman filed earlier in the day for a temporary injunction that would shut down daily fantasy sports leaders FanDuel and DraftKings in the state in the latest blow to the fast-growing, multibillion-dollar industry. A hearing on the injunction is scheduled to be heard by a New York state court on Nov 25. |
Former co-director of Kabbalah Center accused of groping in California trial Posted: 17 Nov 2015 04:49 PM PST The former co-director of the Kabbalah Center, a spiritual group whose brand of Jewish mysticism has drawn numerous celebrity adherents but also controversy, went on trial on Tuesday in a lawsuit brought by a follower who says he groped her. Yehuda Berg, 43, son of the late rabbi who founded the organization, was called as the first witness in the trial, testifying he struggled with drug and alcohol addiction that led to his resignation from leadership in the group in 2014. In a lawsuit filed last year in Los Angeles Superior Court, Jena Scaccetti accused Berg of inviting her to his mother's apartment in 2012, plying her with alcohol and narcotic painkillers and making an unwanted sexual advance that included hugging her and fondling her leg. |

Police say no 'connection to terrorism' in Boston-bound flight incident Posted: 17 Nov 2015 02:12 PM PST An apparently intoxicated 32-year-old Polish woman attempted to open an exit door on a British Airways flight from London to Boston on Tuesday, prompting people on the plane to restrain her, the Massachusetts State Police said.
