Made-in-China jet takes maiden flight Posted: 05 May 2017 01:34 AM PDT The first large made-in-China passenger plane took off on its maiden test flight Friday, marking a key milestone on the country's ambitious journey to compete with the world's leading aircraft makers. The narrow-body C919 jet -- white with green and blue stripes -- soared over Pudong international airport in the commercial hub Shanghai as a crowd of thousands cheered. Built by state-owned aerospace manufacturer Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC), the plane represents nearly a decade of effort in a government-mandated drive to reduce dependence on European consortium Airbus and US aerospace giant Boeing. |

Republican healthcare bill heads to Senate, where it may undergo drastic changes Posted: 05 May 2017 04:55 AM PDT As House Republicans cheered the "beginning of the end" of the Affordable Care Act at a celebration in the White House Rose Garden on Thursday, Senate Republicans welcomed the bill with muted fanfare. After weeks of fits and starts, House Republicans had narrowly passed a proposal to repeal and replace Obamacare and voted to forward to the Senate a bill that is both unpopular with the American public and unlikely to pass the chamber in its current form. |

Deadly unrest grips Venezuela as students rally Posted: 05 May 2017 01:47 AM PDT A student leader was shot dead as protests raged on in the streets of Venezuela Thursday in the latest spasm of anger aimed at removing President Nicolas Maduro from power. The leftist Maduro's opponents accuse him of trying to strengthen his grip on power and delay elections by launching legal proceedings to overhaul the constitution. The latest toll provided by prosecutors on Thursday said 35 people have been killed in just over a month of protests against Maduro, whose opponents blame him for Venezuela's dire economic mess. |
Wanted Red Bull heir has left Singapore after abandoning private jet Posted: 04 May 2017 02:47 AM PDT An heir to the Red Bull fortune wanted in Thailand for his alleged involvement in a deadly hit-and-run has left Singapore after abandoning his private jet and disappeared, Thai police said on Thursday. Vorayuth "Boss" Yoovidhya left Thailand for Singapore on April 25, two days before he had been ordered to report to prosecutors to be formally charged in court, police said. The case is being closely watched in Thailand where it has fueled complaints that the justice system favors the rich and famous, allowing them to break the law with impunity. |

These new iPhone 8 renders are awful, but they still bring good news Posted: 05 May 2017 10:49 AM PDT We see new iPhone 8 leaks and rumors on an almost daily basis, which is crazy considering it's only early May. There are still more than four months to go until Apple unveils this thing, and then we may end up waiting up to two extra months to actually use it. But not all leaks are the same. Some deliver potential bad news, while others bring us the kind of good news we want to see.
A series of 3D renders posted on Weibo by a source that's been providing plenty of mobile leaks over the years deliver the good news that we've been hoping for. Specifically, these images posted by user KK show an all-screen iPhone 8 design that features a vertical dual camera and absolutely no Touch ID button. There isn't one on the back or on the front of the handset. If these are based on accurate information, the renders offer us a preview of what the iPhone will look like. And thankfully, there's no annoying fingerprint sensor on the back, which would be a terrible choice for Apple regardless of how difficult it is to embed a Touch ID sensor in the display's complex layer structure. After using Touch ID on the iPhone for so long, I can't even imagine a scenario where I'd be comfortable unlocking a phone by blindly fishing for a fingerprint sensor on the back. Don't even get me started on the Galaxy S8's fingerprint sensor location. Samsung confirmed that it knows the sensor's position is awkward by including a software feature that reminds you to clean the camera from time to time. You know, because you'll often touch it while reaching for that sensor, inevitably covering it with grease and dirt. Wishful thinking aside, we'll point out the fact that it's still an unconfirmed leak. Even if it's genuine, it may showcase just one iPhone 8 design out of the various concepts Apple has reportedly been considering. |

British PM boosted by local elections ahead of key vote Posted: 05 May 2017 12:43 PM PDT British Prime Minister Theresa May's Conservatives made sweeping gains Friday in local elections, handing her a big boost going into next month's Brexit-dominated parliamentary vote. Final results showed the ruling centre-right party gaining ground across the country, with the main opposition Labour party taking a pounding and Brexit cheerleaders UKIP all but wiped out. Despite the thumping victory, May said there was no room for complacency ahead of the June 8 general election and the negotiations that follow on Britain's withdrawal from the European Union. |

Trump does not think U.S. should copy Australia's health system: White House Posted: 05 May 2017 01:06 PM PDT President Donald Trump was simply saying nice things to an ally when he called Australia's universal healthcare system better than the U.S. system, and he does not think his country should adopt a similar approach, the White House said on Friday. "The president was complimenting a foreign leader on the operations of their healthcare system," White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said at a news briefing. "It didn't mean anything more than that." Trump raised eyebrows when he told Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull on Thursday in New York, "You have better health care than we do." Trump spoke shortly after he led a White House rally with Republicans from the House of Representatives, who had just passed legislation to overturn much of former President Barack Obama's signature healthcare law and move further away from a guarantee of universal coverage. |

Nigeria's Buhari seen in public for first time in weeks Posted: 05 May 2017 06:15 AM PDT Nigeria's President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday made his first public appearance in weeks, re-emerging amid mounting concerns about his health. The 74-year-old, who spent nearly two months earlier this year receiving treatment in London for an undisclosed illness, was at Friday prayers at a mosque in the presidential villa in Abuja. Video posted on Twitter by presidential aide Bashir Ahmad showed Buhari dressed in white, shaking hands with fellow worshippers and waving after the service. |
Apple isn’t as rich as it seems Posted: 04 May 2017 03:13 PM PDT As part of its earnings announcement this week, Apple revealed that it's sitting on $258 billion of cash, mostly overseas. That's more than the GDP of some small countries, and one of the easiest ways to understand just how rich Apple is. But that $250 billion figure is actually a little more impressive than it should be. Apple's money is held overseas, but it still needs to spend cash in the US. To get around paying tax, Apple has been borrowing money, and it's currently sitting on nearly $100 billion in debt.
As the WSJ notes, Apple raised an eye-watering $11 billion in debt last quarter, bringing the total to around $100 billion. That number is set to increase: Apple is ramping up its share buyback program, and the new $1 billion investment fund it announced last night will be funded by debt. Apple opened up orders for its latest bond program this afternoon, and is said to already have raised $22 billion more. This doesn't mean Apple is doomed, or that its cash fund is underwhelming: $150 billion in net assets is still nothing to sneeze at, and is bigger than the market cap of most other companies. But it's worth bearing in mind in the context of Apple's ballooning stock price. A lot of that interest has been generated by rumors of a one-off overseas earnings tax break, which would allow companies like Apple to repatriate cash at a 10% rate or so, rather than the usual 35%. Trump and Apple CEO Tim Cook have talked before, possibly about a one-off tax break, but plans can't be that far advanced if Apple is raising another $22 billion in the US. |
Humpbacks Block Killer Whale Feeding Frenzy in Wild Video Posted: 05 May 2017 10:41 AM PDT A pod of killer whales is stalking baby grey whales off Monterey Bay in California, but a patrolling group of humpback whales is doing everything in its power to foil the killer whales' attacks. A bounty of young, harmless grey whale calves is an irresistible lure for the top ocean-predators. Killer whales (or orcas) can always be found in the area off Monterey, but this year has been particularly grim for the killer whales' prey. |

Pregnancy to cost 425% more under Donald Trump's health plan compared to Obamacare Posted: 04 May 2017 04:06 AM PDT US citizens with the most serious forms of cancer could have to pay up to 35 times more for health insurance under a proposed amendment to Donald Trump's new healthcare bill, analysts have claimed. Fierce debate over what the bill will mean for people with 'pre-existing conditions' has threatened to derail a fresh bid to push the reforms through after they collapsed in March. The President has tried to make clear that provisions for people with illnesses such as cancer and diabetes will not be reduced, saying earlier this week the new healthcare plan "will be every bit as good on pre-existing conditions as Obamacare". |

Legendary Swiss climber cremated near Everest Posted: 04 May 2017 04:43 AM PDT The body of legendary Swiss climber Ueli Steck, who died on Mount Everest, was cremated on Thursday at a Buddhist monastery that lies in the shadow of the world's highest peak. The adventurer's body was flown by helicopter on Thursday to the Tengboche Monastery that lies on the trail to the peaks that claimed his life. A number of climbers were expected to trek down from Everest base camp -- some 20 kilometres (12 miles) from Tengboche -- to attend the cremation, according to Nimesh Karki of Seven Summits, a trekking company that helped Steck organise his Everest attempt. |

If you try and pre-order the OnePlus 5 right now, you’ll be sorely disappointed Posted: 05 May 2017 04:34 PM PDT The OnePlus 5 rumors are in full swing as we speak, as the phone is likely going to arrive by the end of June. But that doesn't mean you can already preorder one, regardless of what product page you might see online.
A OnePlus 5 listing on OppoMart says the phone will cost $449 and will ship in early June. You can't preorder the device yet, and the device is marked as out of stock. Conversely, the 64GB OnePlus 3T retails for $439, while the 128GB version costs $40 more. However, that doesn't mean the retailer has access to accurate availability information for the OnePlus 5. All the information presented on the page can be taken from the various OnePlus 5 rumors out there. Mix in a few guesses, and you end up with a full specs list for the phone that makes plenty of sense for a 2017 Android flagship handset. The OnePlus 5 is rumored to have a 5.5-inch Full HD display not QHD screen as listed on the site. Previous rumors have also claimed the phone will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 platform and feature 6GB of RAM and up to 128GB of storage. A recent report said the handset will have a horizontal dual-lens camera on the back, not vertical as shown in the placeholder image, and that the fingerprint sensor will be placed on the front side. OppoMart lists these specs and features, adding that the rear camera has a 12-megapixel sensor, with an 8-megapixel selfie camera to be found on the front side. OnePlus has not announced a launch event for the handset, although it did start teasing the phone over on social media. |

Donald Trump launches early-morning Twitter rant before praising Fox News Posted: 04 May 2017 06:32 AM PDT President Donald Trump embarked on an early morning Twitter rant about "Fake News" and a former Obama administration official, before praising Fox News for high ratings. The media "will do or say anything in order to get attention," he said. Mr Trump logged in apparently before 7am on Thursday to send two messages criticising former National Security Adviser Susan Rice, for declining to testify to senators investigating alleged Russian election interference. |

Flames, fatality at Venezuela demo over leader's crisis maneuver Posted: 03 May 2017 08:52 PM PDT Venezuelan police fired tear gas and hooded protesters hurled Molotov cocktails as thousands rallied in anger at President Nicolas Maduro's plan to rewrite the constitution. Flames erupted in the latest of more than a month of clashes that prosecutors say have killed 32 people in the oil-rich nation, stricken by food shortages. Government forces used tear gas against demonstrators in las Mercedes, on Caracas' east end, the prosecutor's office said. |
