Posted: 01 Aug 2017 12:14 PM PDT Rex Tillerson has said the US does not blame China for escalating tensions with North Korea and would like to seek a dialogue with Kim Jong-un's regime. The US secretary of state's diplomatic tone directly contradicted President Donald Trump, who tweeted two days ago that he was "very disappointed" with China and accused Beijing of doing "nothing" over Pyongyang's military ambitions. Sec. Tillerson: US doesn't seek regime change in North Korea, "would like to sit and have a dialogue with them about the future." pic.twitter.com/KhIaF0actz— ABC News Politics (@ABCPolitics) August 1, 2017 Mr Tillerson said that that relations between the US and China were "at a bit of a pivot point", but that Washington had "sought to partner" with Beijing over the growing threat from North Korea. An 'underwater test-fire of strategic submarine ballistic missile' conducted at an undisclosed location in North Korea Credit: EPA "We do not seek a regime change, we do not seek a collapse of the regime, we do not seek an accelerated reunification of the peninsula, we do not seek an excuse to send our military north of the 38th Parallel," Mr Tillerson said in the rare press address at the state department. "We are not your enemy ... but you are presenting an unacceptable threat to us, and we have to respond. And we hope that at some point they will begin to understand that and we would like to sit and have a dialogue with them." North Korea claim 'missile can reach all of U.S.' 01:05 China has become increasingly frustrated with US and Japanese criticism that it should do more to rein in Pyongyang. Concerns have increased over North Korea's willingness to continue to test its military hardware in defiance of US sanctions. A US military source reportedly claimed yesterday that Pyongyang's submarine force had been carrying out "highly unusual and unprecedented levels" of activity. The defence official told CNN that three "ejection tests" were carried out on land at Sinpo Naval Shipyard in July. Another test was carried out earlier this year at the base, which is the headquarters of the Maritime Research Institute of North Korea's Academy of National Defence Science. A submarine-launched ballistic missile is displayed in Kim Il-sung Square during a military parade in Pyongyang Credit: AP An ejection test is designed to assess the cold-launch system which is required to propel a missile away from its tube on the submarine before the missile engine ignites, so protecting the boat. The ground-based tests also coincide with a North Korean Romeo-class submarine carrying out "unusual activities" off the east coast of the peninsula for at least one week in late July. North Korea's nuclear threat 01:34 The US and South Korea monitored the activities of the 1,800-ton diesel boat, which is armed with 14 torpedoes and up to 20 mines. The submarine travelled more than 60 miles from the North Korean coast and into international waters, something which no submarine has been observed doing previously. Graphic: North Korea missile launch North Korea first successfully tested a submarine-launched ballistic missile in August 2016. Pyongyang is believed to be aiming to deploy a missile-capable submarine as an additional threat to the US. "Achieving a successful cold-launch ejection test, even from land-based tubes, is a critical step forward," said Lance Gatling, a defence analyst and president of Tokyo-based Nexial Research Inc. |
Philippine militants behead seven loggers: police Posted: 31 Jul 2017 01:58 AM PDT Islamist militants in the Philippines have beheaded seven local loggers they kidnapped last week in their stronghold in the strife-torn south, police said Monday. The bodies of the loggers were found on Sunday in a mountainous village on the island of Basilan, local police chief John Cundo told AFP, blaming the killings on a faction of the Abu Sayyaf kidnap-for-ransom group based there. The group of senior Abu Sayyaf leader Furuji Indama abducted and killed the loggers apparently over a local business row rather than for its typical ransom activities, Cundo said. |

Iran accuses United States of breaching nuclear deal Posted: 01 Aug 2017 07:44 AM PDT By Bozorgmehr Sharafedin LONDON (Reuters) - Iran believes new sanctions that the United States has imposed on it breach the nuclear deal it agreed in 2015 and has complained to a body that oversees the pact's implementation, a senior politician said on Tuesday. Under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), signed by the United States, Russia, China and three European powers, Iran curbed its nuclear work in return for the lifting of most sanctions. The U.S. Senate voted on the same day to impose new sanctions on Iran, Russia and North Korea. |
Posted: 01 Aug 2017 07:09 AM PDT A shooting in a courthouse in a Moscow suburb resulted in three assailants dead and two heavily injured on Tuesday afternoon. Two convoy officers, a man and a woman, also sustained injuries, as did an officer of the National Guard, Russia's newest law enforcement task force. A bailiff stands behind a fence at the main entrance of Moscow Regional Court Credit: Andrey Nikerichev/Moscow News Agency The shooters were alleged members of the so-called "GTA gang" - a reference to the popular video game Grand Theft Auto - a mysterious crime group that used to terrorise drivers heading south on the M4 highway that connects Moscow and Rostov-on-Don. Between 2013 and 2014 the gang was reported to stop cars on the highway by using different methods to damage their tyres, including shooting at the wheels. Gang members would then approach drivers, pretending to offer help but instead robbing and brutally murdering them. In November 2014 the Investigative Committee reported arresting the supposed gang members. In August 2016, a trial of nine of them began in the Moscow Region Court located in a northwestern suburb of the capital. On Tuesday, five of the accused were being transported to the courtroom by two convoy officers, a man and a woman, for another court hearing of the case. In the elevator, it is reported that one of them attacked one of the convoy officers, while the others seized the officers' guns. Once the elevator arrived to the third floor of the courthouse, the accused started shooting at the National Guard officers waiting for them in the hall in an attempt to flee from the courthouse. Both of the convoy officers were injured, as well as one National Guard officer. The other National Guard officers tried to disarm and stop the shooters, killing three of them and heavily injuring two in the process. According to the statement National Guard issued on the heels of the shooting, no one among "civilians" present at the courthouse at the moment was hurt "thanks to the brave and professional actions of the National Guard officers." The prosecutor's office of the Moscow region opened a criminal probe into the accident. Moscow region prosecutor Alexei Zakharov promised to investigate possible violations of the convoy procedure. Perpetrators of the shooting are likely to face additional charges of attempt at murder of a law enforcement officer, stealing firearms and attempt at fleeing custody. The shooting happened at the Moscow Regional Court, around 12 miles from the centre of Moscow |

Air Force One is actually two planes -- one for the president and a spare. |
Nissan attacked for one of 'nastiest anti-union campaigns' in modern US history Posted: 01 Aug 2017 04:00 AM PDT Days before a potentially historic union vote at the Nissan plant in Canton, Mississippi, the car company has been accused of running one of the "nastiest anti-union campaigns in the modern history of the American labour movement". The vote, a fiercely contested effort by the United Auto Workers (UAW) union to represent a foreign automaker's US plant, is planned for Thursday and Friday this week. In the closing days of the campaign, which has attracted support from the former presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders, UAW officials and their allies have become increasingly confident of victory even as managers have pressured workers to vote no. "People are rallying," says Frank Figgers, co-chair of the Mississippi Alliance for Fairness at Nissan. |

Trump administration reaches deal with Texas counties on immigration Posted: 31 Jul 2017 03:09 PM PDT U.S. immigration authorities signed deals on Monday with 18 of Texas' 254 counties to expand a program that allows jailers at local sheriffs' offices to cooperate with federal authorities in immigration enforcement. The deal signed at a sheriffs' meeting in suburban Dallas comes as both the administration of U.S. Republican President Donald Trump, and Texas, the most populous Republican-controlled state, seek to crack down on "sanctuary cities," places that shield immigrants who are in the country illegally. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement reached what is known as a 287(g) agreement with the counties. |
Ford’s Mustang is getting a ‘Good Neighbor Mode’ thanks to an engineer’s angry neighbors Posted: 01 Aug 2017 07:33 AM PDT Unless you live in the middle of nowhere, you've likely experienced the unfiltered rage that comes with being disturbed by a particularly loud car or motorcycle passing by your home. It can be incredibly annoying, especially if it jolts you out of an otherwise pleasant slumber, but Ford thinks it has a solution, and it's all thanks to a little incident between a former Ford engineer and his ticked-off neighbors. The 2018 Ford Mustang will come with what is being casually referred to as "Good Neighbor Mode." Activated within the vehicle's dash menu system, the quiet mode seeks to mute much of the rumble of the exhaust pipes in an effort to keep your neighborhood from turning against you. It can be set manually or activated on a set schedule, automatically turning on or off depending on the time of day. Steve von Forester is responsible for the neighborly new feature. He's the former head of vehicle engineering at Ford and now leads the team which designs and tweaks the overall user experience. Von Forester is also a Mustang owner with a V8 Shelby GT350, which had a habit of rustling his neighbors' feathers. After one particularly touchy situation in which one neighbor called 911 to complain about his loud exhaust, Von Forester came up with the idea for the quiet exhaust option. Along with an overall calmer exhaust note, the newest Mustangs will also get a "Quiet Start" option, which will prevent the vehicle from roaring as the driver turns the key. These features should add up to an overall more suburb-friendly sports car, but that's only if Mustang owners actually decide to use them. |

Top Senate Democrat urges Trump to block China deals over North Korea Posted: 01 Aug 2017 10:15 AM PDT The top Democrat in the U.S. Senate called on President Donald Trump on Tuesday to block some Chinese investments in the United States to pressure China "to help rein in North Korea's threatening and destabilizing behavior." In a letter to Trump, Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer urged him to use his authority through the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States, or CFIUS, to pressure Beijing by suspending approval of "all mergers and acquisitions in the U.S. by Chinese entities." Schumer's request comes amid concern about North Korea, which fired a missile Friday that experts said was capable of hitting Los Angeles. Trump has repeatedly urged China to rein in its ally North Korea, and Schumer agreed. |

See Samsung’s new flip phone powered on for the first time Posted: 31 Jul 2017 12:29 PM PDT Galaxy Note 8 leaks have been dominating the headlines of tech blogs for months now. We've seen renders, cases, release windows and rumored specs sheets, but it's easy to forget that the Note 8 likely won't be the only other phone Samsung releases in the second half of the year. Along with the S8 Active, Samsung is also reportedly working on two smart flip phones, both of which could launch in 2017. We highlighted the Samsung flip phone leaks last month, but over the weekend (via Slashleaks), photos of the SM-G9298 powered up and out in the wild appeared online for the very first time.
At a glance, the SM-G9298 looks relatively advanced for a flip phone. It features a near bezel-less 4.2-inch display on both the outside and the inside of the top flap, both of which look sharp in the leaked images. The phone could almost pass as a miniature Galaxy S8 from the front (if it didn't also flip open). The physical buttons are situated similarly to the buttons on the SM-G1650 we covered in June, though the Home, Back and Recent buttons now surround the control pad while the dedicated buttons for camera and email functionality have vanished altogether. As for specifications, previous leaks suggest that the flip phone will feature a Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor, 4GB RAM, 64GB storage, 2,300mAh battery, 12-megapixel rear camera and 5-megapixel front camera. Unfortunately, the phone will almost certainly launch in a few Asian markets, including China, so our Western readers will have to stick with non-flippable phones. The good news is that if a final or near-final version of the phone is floating around in the wild, the unveiling should come soon. |

Venezuelan opposition leaders dragged from their homes in early morning raids Posted: 01 Aug 2017 03:03 AM PDT Venezuelan opposition leaders Leopoldo Lopez and Antonio Ledezma were taken from their homes by intelligence agents in the early hours of Tuesday morning, in the wake of the controversial assembly vote that Nicolas Maduro said would open "a new phase of combat" in the country's revolution. Venezuelan opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez and Caracas Mayor Antonio Ledezma Credit: AFP Videos distributed by the leaders' families showed them being dragged out of their houses and bundled into cars belonging to the notorious intelligence unit Sebin. The opposition denounced the detentions as "kidnappings", and said the whereabouts of the two men was currently unknown. "Maduro is responsible if anything happens to him," the wife of Mr Lopez, Lilian Tintori, said, adding that the government would not make her husband "bow down". A still image taken from a social media video is said to show the moment in which opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez is led into a vehicle marked with "Sebin", Venezuela's intelligence agency, in Caracas Credit: REUTERS The detention of the pair - who were both under house arrest after being released from prison - appears to herald the beginning of the crackdown on opposition "terrorists" that Mr Maduro had vowed would follow the constituent assembly vote. The two leaders had both previously been imprisoned in Ramo Verde over their role in instigating anti-government protests. Mr Lopez spent three and a half years in the jail before a judge ordered his transfer to house arrest in July; Mr Ledezma had been serving his sentence at home since 2015. The re-imprisonment of the pair appears to herald the beginning of the crackdown on opposition "terrorists" that Mr Maduro had vowed would follow the constituent assembly vote. Elias Jaua, head of the Presidential Commission for the Constituent Assembly, said the men had been sent back to prison for violating the conditions of their house arrest, which restricted political declarations and messages. "Above all if those messages call for disregard for the institutions, for disregard for the results," he told state television. Supporters of arrested Caracas metropolitan mayor Antonio Ledezma hold up a cutout of his face during a gathering in his support in Caracas, Venezuela Credit: REUTERS The assembly is tasked with rewriting the constitution, a move the Leftist leader insists is necessary to bring stability to Venezuela amid months of deadly protests. But critics say it is an illegal power grab aimed at circumventing the opposition-controlled National Assembly (AN), and is the beginning of a Cuban-style congress in the oil-rich nation. The vote earned Mr Maduro a place on the US Treasury sanctions list alongside Zimbabwe's Robert Mugabe, Syria's Bashar Assad and Kim Jong-un of North Korea. "Yesterday's illegitimate elections confirm that Maduro is a dictator who disregards the will of the Venezuelan people," said Steve Mnuchin, the US Treasury secretary, late on Monday. Luisa Ortega Diaz, the Venezuelan attorney general, said that it was an expression of Mr Maduro's "dictatorial ambition". Explosions and clashes in Venezuela 00:57 Despite widespread reports of empty polling stations, Mr Maduro hailed Sunday's election as a "vote for the revolution", claiming a turnout of over 8 million - a figure the opposition puts closer to 2.5 million. He shrugged off the US sanctions on Monday night, dismissing Donald Trump as an desperate "emperor". "Sanctions from the empire don't scare me," he insisted. The constituent assembly is to convene on Wednesday and Mr Maduro has warned that its first task will be to jail opposition "terrorists". But faced with hyperinflation and devastating shortages of food and medicine, many Venezuelans say they will not be deterred from taking to the streets. At a gathering in eastern Caracas, José Gregorio Hernández, a 47-year-old therapist, told The Telegraph he was not afraid. "We are already dying of hunger and insecurity. Tensions rise as Kenya poll campaign enters final stretch Posted: 31 Jul 2017 06:46 PM PDT Kenya's election campaign enters a tense final week Tuesday, with a tight race between incumbent Uhuru Kenyatta and his rival Raila Odinga leading to intensified personal attacks and rigging accusations. The vote comes 10 years after Odinga claimed an election was stolen from him and the country plunged into two months of politically-motivated ethnic clashes, which along with a police crackdown on protests left more than 1,100 dead and 600,000 displaced. Voting in Kenya largely takes place along communal lines, and both Kenyatta and Odinga are heading formidable alliances of different ethnic blocs with closely matched numbers, meaning turnout will be crucial to either side's success. |

Incredibly rare white snake found in Australia Posted: 01 Aug 2017 07:08 AM PDT A bright white snake with an "incredibly rare mutation" has been found in Australia's Northern Territory. The reptile was rescued by a resident in the area and handed into the Territory Wildlife Park where it is currently being cared for. "It is a white slaty grey, which is native to Australia but this one has an incredibly rare mutation, as they are usually a dark brown colour," the park said. "The nocturnal snake will be placed in quarantine at the park to ensure it is free of any nasties that can harm our other animals and then be put on display for everyone to marvel at." Staff said the white snake's black eyes indicate it is leucistic and not albino. They added the snake will not be released back into the wild as it "would be unlikely to live long". "Animals of this colouring are usually 'sitting ducks'," they added. "This one was also in a conflict zone with human pets - so safer with us, and we will make sure she has a good life free of threats. "In an ideal world we would not need to rescue wildlife, but humans have created this situation and we have to try and manage it the best we can." Your cable company is robbing you every month, but we’ll tell you how to stop them Posted: 31 Jul 2017 05:30 PM PDT Like millions of other Americans across the country, you're probably paying more for home internet service than you should be. No, we're not simply talking about the inflated monthly fees ISPs charge for actual home internet service, because that's supply and demand. We're talking about the extra $8 to $10 you spend each month on your modem rental fee. You probably don't even realize it. Go look at your bill… it's there. What you might not know, however, is that you can purchase your own compatible modem for next to nothing, and that monthly fee with vanish as soon as you return your leased modem to your cable provider. There are a bunch of good options out there, but we recommend the NETGEAR CM400 (8x4) DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modem, which is discounted right now on Amazon and compatible with every major ISP in the US. Here are some key details from the product page:

Qatar had asked the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) to intervene after its national carrier was denied access to the airspace of Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates as part of economic sanctions. The four countries severed ties with Qatar on June 5, accusing it of supporting terrorism, something Doha denies. |

Climate change is already wreaking havoc on Miami Beach, and Al Gore has the clip to prove it Posted: 01 Aug 2017 08:10 AM PDT Much of the conversation around climate change is focused on what will happen or what could happen, but the truth is that you don't have to peer into the future to witness its dramatic toll. You could, for example, just take a look at what's happening right now in Miami Beach, Florida. SEE ALSO: Al Gore is back in theaters, with a powerful, anti-Trump message on climate change In a new clip from An Inconvenient Sequel, mayor Philip Levine shows Al Gore around the streets of Miami – which are under several inches of water, thanks to rising sea levels. The city's methods for dealing with flooded streets include pumping out the water ("it's not very effective," admits Levine) and raising the roads. But Levine's sensible enough to realize they can only do so much. "It's going to get worse and worse as the tide comes up," he says. And as Gore dryly notes, "It's kind of hard to pump the ocean." An Inconvenient Sequel hit theaters July 28. |
