Democrats hope to corner Gorsuch in confirmation battleSenate Democrats hope to force Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch into revealing his opinions on abortion rights and the legality of President Trump's travel ban during confirmation hearings that begin Monday. Supreme Court nominees are usually circumspect when asked to share their views on issues that could one day make their way to the court, a standard that Gorsuch's defenders say was set by liberal Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg during her confirmation hearing in 1993.

White House tries to shift discussion amid FBI director's testimonyWhite House press secretary Sean Spicer, reacting to news from the first day of House Intelligence Committee hearings into the 2016 election, tried to steer reporters away from questions about possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian officials — and onto the administration's preferred topic, news media leaks about intercepted conversations involving fired National Security Adviser Michael Flynn. Spicer's customary daily press briefing took place in the afternoon as FBI Director James Comey and National Security Agency head Mike Rogers were still testifying. Earlier in the day, Comey said he had "no information" to support Trump's claim that his predecessor, President Obama, wiretapped his campaign — a widely anticipated statement that did not lead to a retraction by the White House.

Peru struggles with devastating El Niño floodingPeruvians struggled on Sunday to cope with avalanches, mudslides and extensive flash flooding caused by torrential downpours, and forecasters predicted still more rain ahead, prolonging the country's woes. The highly unusual rains follow a series of storms that have struck hard along Peru's northern coast, with voracious waters inundating hospitals and leaving some small villages isolated. Peru's government said that 374 people were killed in 1998 during a similar period of massive rains and flooding caused by rains blamed on the El Niño climate pattern.

Earth just had its second-warmest February on record

Posted: 19 Mar 2017 12:27 PM PDT

Earth just had its second-warmest February on recordAs the saying goes: Another month, another disconcerting report from top U.S. climate agencies. Last month was Earth's second-hottest February on record since at least 1880, NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) recently reported.  At the same time, the extent of sea ice in the Arctic and Antarctica hit record monthly lows. SEE ALSO: Here's why it's so frickin' hot right now In February 2017, the average global temperature was 1.76 degrees Fahrenheit above the 20th-century average of 53.9 degrees, NOAA's National Centers for Environmental Information said late last week.  February 2017 land and ocean temperature percentiles, Image: NOAA/NCEI Only February 2016 was warmer, at a staggering 2.43 degrees Fahrenheit above average, NOAA said. The entire year of 2016 was also the hottest on record, with last year's temperatures exceeding all previous years since record-keeping began 137 years ago.  NOAA and NASA scientists said human-caused global warming was responsible for a majority of the annual temperature gains — a fact the Trump administration seems determined to ignore. For U.S. residents, it's probably not surprising to learn that last month was exceptionally warm. February 2017 saw widespread record warmth across the country and a series of record highs.  Other parts of the world similarly experienced an atypically warm winter. Image: NOAA From December 2016 to February 2017, the global average temperature was 1.60 degrees Fahrenheit above the 20th-century average of 53.8 degrees, NOAA said. This was the second warmest for this season, second only to December 2015 to February 2016. The first two months of 2017 also landed in second place. The year-to-date average temperature for January through February 2017 was 1.69 degrees Fahrenheit above average, just below the first two months of 2016. Those balmier temperatures meant troubling news for the planet's sea ice.  Sea ice extent for Arctic (left) and Antarctic regions. Image: National snow ice and data center/university of colorado, boulder Both the Arctic and Antarctic seas logged the smallest February sea ice extent since satellite records began in 1979, according to NOAA data analyzed by the Rutgers Global Snow Lab. The average Antarctic sea ice extent was 24.4 percent below the 1981-2010 average for February, the U.S. climate agency reported. In the Arctic region, the average sea ice extent was 7.6 percent below average. But warmer air temperatures aren't the only culprit in shrinking sea ice. Ocean temperatures are similarly heating up, in part because of human-driven climate change. Sea ice extent for 2016 (blue) compared to other record low years, as of Dec. 5, 2016. Image: national snow and ice data center A new study found oceans may be warming about 13 percent faster than scientists previously thought. The warming rate from 1992 is nearly two times the warming rate from 1960, according to a paper published March 10 in the journal Science Advances. In its monthly report, NOAA said the globally averaged sea surface temperature also ranked as second-highest on record for February, the December-February season and the two-month year-to-date. Anyone want to guess how March's report will look? WATCH: Watch how global warming heats up the world from 1880-2016

Tillerson ends China trip with warm words from President XiBy Yeganeh Torbati and Michael Martina BEIJING (Reuters) - With warm words from Chinese President Xi Jinping on Sunday, U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson ended his first trip to Asia since taking office with an agreement to work together with China on North Korea and putting aside trickier issues. China has been irritated at being repeatedly told by Washington to rein in North Korea's nuclear and missile programs and the U.S. decision to base an advanced missile defense system in South Korea. Beijing is also deeply suspicious of U.S. intentions toward self-ruled Taiwan, which China claims as its own, with the Trump administration crafting a big new arms package for the island that is bound to anger China.

Trump's net worth dwindled to $3.5 billion, Forbes saysBy Barbara Goldberg NEW YORK (Reuters) - While Donald Trump's political fortunes were rising, his net worth was dropping to a mere $3.5 billion, or roughly a third of what he claimed during his successful campaign for the U.S. presidency, according to the latest Forbes list of the world's billionaires. Trump tumbled more than 100 spots to No. 544 on the magazine's 31st annual list, largely because of the impact of the slumping New York real estate market on his holdings. The developer-turned-politician, who ranked No. 205 last year, fell further behind to Bill Gates, the list's perennial leader.

Apple’s own website hints new products might launch tomorrow morning

Apple's own website hints new products might launch tomorrow morning

We've been hearing rumors swirling about some kind of Apple product launch this spring, but event invites are still nowhere to be seen. With time running out for a March event to happen, it's increasingly possible that Apple could be planning to quietly release updates to some products with no event and minimal fanfare. And based on hints coming from Apple's own website, it could happen tomorrow morning.

As MacRumors spotted, Apple's system status page currently shows that the Apple Store will be down tomorrow morning from 3.00AM to 8.30AM. The Apple Store traditionally goes down before new products are announced; 8.30AM is also a common time for Apple to send out press releases. Combine that with the rumors that have been swirling about product updates, and it's definitely time to be suspicious.

So, what's Tim Cook & Co got cooking? The likeliest new product that wouldn't merit a launch event would be a spec-bumped version of the iPhone SE. We've been hearing that Apple might be updating it to include a 128GB storage option, bringing it in line with other new iPhones. It's also very possible that other minor components get an update, like moving to the second-generation Touch ID sensor or a newer camera module.

The iPhone SE was launched this time last year, so an update at this point would make sense, but changing the physical design and form factor wouldn't. Moreover, with the launch of an iPhone 7S and iPhone 8 both expected in September, it wouldn't make sense for Apple to release a splashy new design in spring, which would potentially cannibalize iPhone 8 sales in the fall.

But on the other hand, Samsung is launching its latest and greatest on March 29th, and releasing a new handset at the same time would be a classically trolly move from Apple.

Other good guesses for spec-bumped products would be updated iPads, which we were all half-expecting to see at an event this spring. It would be uncharacteristic for Apple to launch a brand-new iPad size (as had been rumored) without a launch event, but a spec bump and slimming-down of the current lineup would make sense.

There's also the Mac line to consider. Although the MacBook Pro just got a once-in-a-generation overhaul, the iMac is due a minor update, and Intel's recently-released Kaby Lake processors are yet to find their way inside.

'Don't use Taiwan', Taipei frets ahead of Trump-Xi meetingBy J.R. Wu and Jess Macy Yu TAIPEI (Reuters) - Taiwan's government, worried about being used as a pawn by China and the United States, said on Monday the self-ruled island must protect its own interests as concerns in Taipei rise ahead of an expected meeting of U.S and Chinese leaders. China has never renounced the use of force to take back what it deems a wayward province and has been pressuring Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen, who leads an independence-leaning ruling party, to concede Taiwan is a part of China. The United States is Taiwan's only major political ally and sole arms supplier, and weapons sales to Taiwan have repeatedly upset Beijing.

Man dies after electrocuting himself by charging his iPhone in the bath

A man in London, England was electrocuted and pronounced dead in his home after attempting to charge his iPhone while using it in the bath. According to a report from the Daily Mail, Richard Bull's body was first discovered by his wife, who initially assumed he had been attacked based on the severity of the burns.

Police Commissioner Craig Pattison told the Mail that he couldn't rule out suicide when he heard the details of the incident, but after arriving at the scene, police concluded that it was an accident:

Initial circumstances indicated suicide. The question was considered in the original call, but the cable wasn't near the bath, it had been run there to charge a mobile phone. The extension cable was on the floor and it appeared as though he had his phone charger on his chest and the part between the phone charger and the cable had made contact with the water.

As a result of the tragedy, Dr. Sean Cummings -- the coroner -- plans to write a letter to Apple asking the company to attach warnings to its phones. Bringing an electronic device into the bath while it's plugged into an outlet is probably something you would avoid doing, but as unwilling as many of us are to walk away from our phones even for an instant, it's not nearly as surprising as it probably should be that this happened.

Don't bring electronic devices with you into the bath. Let's keep hammering that point home.
