Migrant caravan fragments as hundreds return to the road Posted: 09 Nov 2018 11:19 AM PST The caravan of Central American migrants whose trek toward the United States became a hot-button issue in the US mid-term elections fragmented Friday as hundreds left Mexico City to resume their journey. Around 5,500 migrants had been camped out in a shelter set up at the weekend inside a stadium in the capital. The caravan set out on October 13 from San Pedro Sula, Honduras, and has covered more than 1,600 kilometers (1,000 miles) so far. |

Posted: 09 Nov 2018 05:03 AM PST A Fly Jamaica plane has been forced into a crash landing at a Guyana airport after developing a "technical problem" en route to Toronto, leaving at least six passengers injured. In the emergency landing the aircraft overran the airstrip, crashed through a perimeter fence and came to a rest a few feet in front of a steep ditch. The airline issued a statement saying: "We can confirm that flight OJ256 bound for Toronto has returned to Georgetown with a technical problem and has suffered an accident on landing. |

A resourceful student turned to Tinder for help studying for her midterm Posted: 08 Nov 2018 05:58 PM PST A student struggling with math turned to Tinder for last minute help. College sophomore Maddi McMaster has taken calculus twice, and she was at her breaking point right before her midterm. "My strongest subject is definitely English," she said over Twitter DM. "I've always been terrible at math, so God knows why I chose an engineering degree when I first came to college." She had "procrastinated with studying," and the high school junior who usually helped her out with homework wasn't on campus that late. Mom: "How's school going?" pic.twitter.com/EaWfBYUTB3 — Maddi McMaster (@maddibraps) November 8, 2018 SEE ALSO: Next time someone annoys you on Tinder, rock this Halloween 'ghosted' costume "After staring at the problems for 45 minutes, I realized there was just absolutely no way I was gonna figure them out," she explained. The online tutorials weren't helping much, and none of her friends had taken calculus before, either. So she hastily jotted down a sign that said, "I NEED HELP WITH CALCULUS" and made it her Tinder profile picture. Then she added a bio: "I didn't actually meet up with anyone," she said. "But I had people message me offering help." When her tweet went viral and ended up on the Minnesota Barstool account, random people DM'd on Instagram with help. "I'd say I knew a solid 50 percent of the material, but it's pretty much an enigma until I actually get a score back," she stressed. "So hopefully I somehow did better than that." On the plus side, Maddi probably won't have to take calculus ever again — she's transferring into school's liberal arts department after this semester. "I'm taking psychology courses which of course involve science," she explained. "But to me it's a more digestible version." She admitted that she might resort to looking for tutors on Tinder again. "Not that I'm planning on [it] but if there's another dire situation like this I'll definitely have to consider it," she joked. Nationwide protests held in support of Mueller probe Posted: 09 Nov 2018 08:53 AM PST U.S. progressive groups staged hundreds of protests nationwide on Thursday evening to demand that President Trump do nothing to hinder an ongoing investigation into his campaign and Russian meddling during the 2016 U.S. election. The protests, operating under the banner "Nobody Is Above the Law" and led by the activist group MoveOn, called for people to gather in cities at 5 p.m. on Thursday in an effort to protect the investigation led by special counsel Robert Mueller. The action was spurred by Trump's move on Wednesday to replace Attorney General Jeff Sessions with Sessions's chief of staff, Matt Whitaker, as acting attorney general. |

US to stop ‘inflight refuelling’ of Saudi-led coalition jets in Yemen Posted: 10 Nov 2018 07:50 AM PST The US will stop the "inflight refuelling" of Saudi-led coalition jets in Yemen amid growing anger over civilian casualties from the kingdom's air strikes. The decision by Americans to pull out also comes amid outrage by US politicians from both political parties over the killing of Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul. The Saudis said it had "requested cessation of inflight refuelling" by the US, which appeared to suggest it was the kingdom was behind the decision. |

Democrats dig in for Florida recount battle, Trump sends lawyers Posted: 09 Nov 2018 01:38 PM PST As his lead dwindled in Florida's Senate race, Republican Governor Rick Scott filed lawsuits late on Thursday against Democratic election supervisors in two counties, accusing them of violating election law and demanding access to records of their vote tallies. Incumbent Democratic U.S. Senator Bill Nelson's campaign also filed a motion in federal court asking that provisional and absentee ballots not be rejected because election officials deem that the signatures do not match voters' signatures already on file. Trump accused Democratic election officials in the two Florida counties of corruption, without providing any evidence. |

Donald Trump's executive order to limit asylum being challenged in court Posted: 10 Nov 2018 10:43 AM PST President Donald Trump issued a proclamation to deny asylum to migrants who enter the country illegally as caravans of Central American migrants slowly approach the US-Mexico border. The plan was immediately challenged in court by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and other legal groups who swiftly sued in federal court in Northern California, generally seen as a liberal federal court district. "The arrival of large numbers ... will contribute to the overloading of our immigration and asylum system and to the release of thousands ... into the interior of the United States," Mr Trump said in the proclamation, calling it a crisis. |
Facebook stops requiring arbitration of sexual harassment claims Posted: 09 Nov 2018 04:41 PM PST Facebook on Friday said it will no longer require employees to resolve sexual harassment claims via arbitration, mirroring a move by Google. "Today, we are publishing our updated Workplace Relationships policy and amending our arbitration agreements to make arbitration a choice rather than a requirement in sexual harassment claims," Facebook corporate media relations director Anthony Harrison told AFP. Google on Thursday outlined changes to its handling of sexual misconduct complaints, hoping to calm outrage that triggered a worldwide walkout of workers last week. |
