US accuses China, Taiwan firms with stealing secrets from chip giant Micron Posted: 01 Nov 2018 11:42 AM PDT US Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced charges Thursday against Chinese and Taiwan companies for theft of an estimate $8.75 billion worth of trade secrets from US semiconductor giant Micron. The indictment released in the US district court in San Jose, California alleges that Chinese state-owned Fujian Jinhua Integrated Circuit Co. and privately owned United Microelectronics Corporation of Taiwan, along with three UMC executives, conspired to steal Micron trade secrets to help UMC and Fujian Jinhua develop DRAM chips used in many computer processors. It said the three Taiwanese men -- Stephen Chen Zhengkun, He Jianting and Kenny Wang Yungming -- all previously worked at Micron and stole its technology when they joined UMC with the express purpose of transferring it to Fujian Jinhua, a two-year-old firm. |

Yahoo News Explains: The haunted history of Halloween Posted: 31 Oct 2018 01:22 PM PDT Halloween has been around for quite some time, but it hasn't always been the candy and costume-filled holiday it is today. The second night of the festival was known as All Hallows' Eve, which was later shortened to Halloween. While the name didn't stick, the idea of giving kids treats to discourage pranks did — but no one would get candy unless they asked politely. |

Fatima Cody Stanford, a doctor at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, said she was on a flight from Indianapolis to Boston when a woman sitting next to her began hyperventilating. Dr Stanford told CNN she was helping the passenger when a flight attendant intervened and asked if she was a physician, to which she replied she was. |

Indonesian rescue workers believe fuselage of crashed plane found Posted: 31 Oct 2018 02:29 AM PDT Ground staff lost touch with flight JT610 of Indonesian budget airline Lion Air 13 minutes after the Boeing 737 MAX 8 took off early on Monday from Jakarta, on its way to the tin-mining town of Pangkal Pinang. Indonesia's military chief said he believed the plane had been located, and a transport safety official said divers would be sent to confirm the origin of a "ping" signal picked up by a search and rescue team late on Tuesday. Speaking on board the navy ship KRI Rigel, navy official Colonel Haris Djoko Nugroho told broadcaster TVOne that a 22-meter long object had been found in waters about 32 meters deep, and a sonar was being used to identify it. |

Indonesian investigators examine black box from crashed jet Posted: 01 Nov 2018 07:47 AM PDT Indonesia's second-deadliest air disaster since 1997 has prompted renewed concern about its patchy safety record, and the government has said Lion Air will be regulated more closely. "Tonight we will move as quickly as possible to download what is in this black box," Haryo Satmiko, deputy chief of Indonesia's transportation safety committee (KNKT), told a news conference. Despite initial reports, authorities did not know for certain whether the "crash survivable memory unit" was from the flight data recorder or cockpit voice recorder, as portions of it were missing, Satmiko said. |
Mohammed bin Salman 'told White House' Khashoggi was a dangerous Islamist Posted: 01 Nov 2018 11:26 AM PDT Mohammed bin Salman, the crown prince of Saudi Arabia, reportedly told the White House that Jamal Khashoggi was a dangerous Islamist in a phone call days after the journalist was murdered. Crown Prince Mohammed told Jared Kushner, Donald Trump's son-in-law, and John Bolton, the president's national security advisor, that Mr Khashoggi was a member of the Muslim Brotherhood, according to the Washington Post. The prince's private disparagement of the murdered journalist is at odds with his public comments, where he described Mr Khashoggi's killing as "repulsive" and said it was "very painful for all Saudis". His reported comments were made while Saudi Arabia was still claiming that Mr Khashoggi had walked safely out of the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, a story that has now changed several times. The remarks are likely to fuel suspicions among US senators that Crown Prince Mohammed ordered Mr Khashoggi's death but placed the blame on low-level operatives after the killing led to a diplomatic crisis. Saudi Arabia has arrested 18 men on suspicion of killing Mr Khashoggi but denied that Crown Prince Mohammed ordered his death or had any involvement in it. A demonstrator holds a poster of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi during a gathering outside the Saudi Arabia consulate in Istanbul Credit: YASIN AKGUL/ AFP Neither the White House nor Saudi Arabia has commented on the report about the October 9 phone call between Mr Bolton, Mr Kushner and the crown prince. Mr Khashoggi's family have consistently denied that he was a member of the Muslim Brotherhood, an Islamist group that was once tolerated by Saudi Arabia but is now banned. The Muslim Brotherhood is not considered a terrorist group by Western countries, although it is banned by several authoritarian regimes in the Middle East, including Egypt and the UAE. In his writings, Mr Khashoggi expressed sympathy for parts of the group's agenda and praised Qatar, the only Gulf Arab state to embrace the Brotherhood. Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, also reportedly called senior White House officials to defend the crown prince and emphasise that Israel sees him as an important partner in the Middle East. Mr Netanyahu and the White House both consider Crown Prince Mohammed an ally against Iran and hope that he will lead other Arab states in endorsing a US plan for peace between Israel and the Palestinians. Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly vouched for Mohammed bin Salman to US officials Credit: Ronen Zvulun/Pool via AP Israel's relationship with Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states has been warming in recent years and the once-secret relations are becoming ever more public. Mr Netanyahu visited Oman last week and two Israeli ministers made trips to the UAE, drawing protests from Palestinians who argued the Arab states were "normalising" relations with Israel while it continues to occupy the West Bank and blockade Gaza. Turkish investigators are continuing to search for Mr Khashoggi's body. One line of inquiry is that his Saudi killers dissolved it in acid, although experts said it seemed unlikely they could manage that quickly and within the consulate in Istanbul. |

U.S. charges Chinese intelligence officers for jet engine data hack Posted: 30 Oct 2018 09:18 PM PDT Chinese intelligence officers conspired with hackers and company insiders to break into private companies' computer systems and steal information on a turbo fan engine used in commercial jetliners, according to a U.S. indictment unsealed on Tuesday. The indictment said at the time of the hacks, a Chinese-state owned aerospace company was working to develop a comparable engine for use in aircraft manufactured in China and in other countries. The 10 people charged conspired to steal sensitive data "that could be used by Chinese entities to build the same or similar engine without incurring substantial research and development expenses," the indictment released by the U.S. Department of Justice said. |

Groundskeeper in Bayer in U.S. weed-killer case accepts reduced award Posted: 31 Oct 2018 05:30 PM PDT The decision by Dewayne Johnson, who sued Monsanto in 2016, brings the total award to $78 million, down from the jury's verdict on Aug. 10 of $289 million - $39 million in compensatory and $250 million in punitive damages. Johnson's law firm said in a statement that he accepted the reduction "to hopefully achieve a final resolution within his lifetime." Judge Suzanne Bolanos of San Francisco's Superior Court of California, who oversaw the trial, earlier this month affirmed the liability portion of the verdict, but ordered punitive damages to be slashed to concur with California and federal law. Bayer denies allegations that glyphosate can cause cancer and said it will appeal the decision as the verdict was not supported by the evidence presented at trial. |

Midterms 2018: Early voting by young people up 500% in Texas and Georgia Posted: 31 Oct 2018 03:04 AM PDT Early voting among young people in key US midterm battleground states has surged dramatically, the latest data shows, suggesting a potential jump in enthusiasm for Democratic candidates. With six days to go until election day, Texas and Georgia, two traditionally Republican-leaning states, have increased their early vote rate among 18-29 year-olds by nearly five times or more compared to 2014. America's early voting system allows voters to cast their ballot early, either via postal voting or at designated polling stations, in a bid to increase participation and relieve congestion on election day. |
Adorable girl who marveled at Michelle Obama's portrait dressed as it for Halloween Posted: 01 Nov 2018 08:05 AM PDT Parker Curry, the young girl who was photographed marveling over Michelle Obama's Smithsonian portrait earlier this year, found the perfect Halloween costume. Since she's such a fan of the former first lady, Parker decided to recreate the iconic work of art — painted by Baltimore-based artist Amy Sherald — to wear while trick-or-treating. And as you may have guessed, she totally nailed it. On Wednesday night, Curry's mom, Jessica, sent BuzzFeed News Reporter David Mack some photographs of Parker's stunning Halloween costume, and, well, just look for yourself... Happy #Halloween! Can you guess who I am? pic.twitter.com/LZA95MT9rl — Parker Curry (@_parkercurry) November 1, 2018 SEE ALSO: Powerful photos capture young girl marveling over Michelle Obama portrait When Jessica asked Parker what she wanted to dress up as for Halloween this year, the three year old answered "Michelle Obama" immediately. "Flat out. No hesitation. Half of a second later. 'I want to be Michelle Obama,' and I was like Whoa," Jessica told BuzzFeed News. "I thought she was going to be like, 'I want to be Elsa or some other character like that.'" Parker's dress bears a striking resemblance to the dress Michelle Obama wore when posing for the portrait, which was designed by Michelle Smith's label Milly. Parker's was reportedly made by Alisha Welsh, who runs Magnolia Lake Children's Clothing in New York. Mack even shared a side-by-side photo of Parker and the portrait so you can really take in the comparison. The photograph soon went viral and even gained the attention of Michelle Obama herself. Shortly after Parker's visit to the museum, Obama met with her and the two had a delightful "dance party" to Taylor Swift. Casual. View this post on Instagram Parker, I'm so glad I had the chance to meet you today (and for the dance party)! Keep on dreaming big for yourself...and maybe one day I'll proudly look up at a portrait of you! Worldwide Google walkout over sexual harassment, racism and pay inequality Posted: 01 Nov 2018 07:09 AM PDT More than 1,000 Google employees and contractors in Asia and Europe staged brief midday walkouts on Thursday, with more expected to follow at offices worldwide, amid complaints of sexism, racism and unchecked executive power in their workplaces. In a statement late Wednesday, the organizers called on Google parent Alphabet Inc. to add an employee representative to its board of directors and to internally share pay equity data. They also asked for changes to Google's human resources practices intended to make bringing harassment claims a fairer process. Google Chief Executive Sundar Pichai said in a statement that "employees have raised constructive ideas" and that the company was "taking in all their feedback so we can turn these ideas into action." Hundreds of workers filed out of its European headquarters in Dublin shortly after 11 a.m. local time, while organizers shared photographs on social media of hundreds more leaving Google offices in London, Zurich, Berlin, Tokyo and Singapore.
