Philippine mayor on Duterte's 'narco-list' slain by 'sniper' Posted: 02 Jul 2018 12:52 AM PDT A Philippine mayor on President Rodrigo Duterte's list of allegedly narcotics-linked officials was shot dead Monday by a "sniper" in a broad daylight attack at a town ceremony, police said. Antonio Halili was hit in the chest by a single shot fired from a distance, unleashing chaotic scenes during the weekly flag raising ceremony at the town hall in Tanauan, south of Manila. Town police chief Renato Mercado told AFP the shot was fired from about 150 metres (490 feet) away. |

Kim Jong-un 'blasts workers at factories for not working hard enough' Posted: 01 Jul 2018 10:13 PM PDT Kim Jong-un, the North Korean dictator, has lambasted workers at two textile factories for not working hard enough, failing to take care of their buildings and moaning about shortages of money and materials, according to state-run media. Mr Kim expressed his fury at the failing of workers at two factories in the city of Sinuiju, close to the border with China, the Korean Central News Agency reported on Monday. At the Sinuiju Textile Mill, Mr Kim declared that the factory and its workers have supported the nation's light industry sector since it was established in the 1950s - before condemning its present-day workforce for failing to live up to that "proud tradition". Instead of complaining about a lack of funds and equipment, the workers should put more effort into modernising their facilities by themselves. He added that the employees needed to increase their productivity. Kim Jong-Un visits the Sinuiju Chemical Fibre Mill Credit: AFP On a subsequent visit to another nearby textile factory, Mr Kim criticised the staff for not making repairs to their crumbling buildings, saying the "precious" facilities looked more like a stable. Management of the two facilities appear to have got off lightly, however, as Mr Kim is notorious for a short temper and draconian punishments for those that displease him. Kim Jong-un inspects the Sinuiju Chemical Fibre Mill Credit: AFP In May 2015, the North Korean leader flew into a rage during a visit to the Taedonggang Terrapin Farm, which had been built on the orders of his father, after discovering a number of dead baby terrapins in the tanks. He was further incensed when managers admitted they had not been able to breed lobsters ahead of a national holiday marking the founding of the Workers' Party of Korea. North Korean leader Kim Jong-un inspects some textiles while visiting the Sinuiju Textile Mill Credit: AFP KCNA reported that Mr Kim accused officials of "incompetence, an outmoded way of thinking and an irresponsible work style". Despite the manager's explanation that the terrapins had died due to electricity shortages, Mr Kim insisted the failings were down to bad management and had the man summarily shot. |

Trump: I'm told I shouldn't ask my SCOTUS nominee about Roe v. Wade Posted: 01 Jul 2018 08:20 AM PDT President Trump said he probably won't ask potential Supreme Court candidates about their opinions on abortion before nominating Justice Anthony M. Kennedy's replacement. In a program that aired Sunday morning, Fox News journalist Maria Bartiromo asked Trump if he would ask his nominees beforehand how they might vote on Roe v. Wade, the landmark Supreme Court decision affirming that the constitutional right to privacy extends to a woman's decision to have an abortion. Trump responded that he's been advised not to ask such specific questions and that he plans to appoint another conservative justice like Neil Gorsuch, whom Trump appointed to replace Antonin Scalia. |

Classmates yearn for safe return of Thai boys trapped in cave Posted: 02 Jul 2018 12:58 AM PDT Classmates of 12 boys trapped in a flooded Thai cave spoke of their hopes for a miracle rescue Monday, as divers inched through thick mud and water towards an air pocket where the group is believed to be. The massive rescue effort has been hampered by heavy rains that flooded the Tham Luang cave in northern Thailand, blocking access to chambers where it is hoped the group will be found alive. Friends and teachers of the "Wild Boar" football team refused to give up hope of seeing the young players again. |

Timmy Kinner, a 30-year-old from Los Angeles who had been staying at the complex, has been arrested, Boise police said. Kinner was being held without bail at the Ada County jail on 15 charges, including six of injury to a child and nine of aggravated battery, jail records showed. |

North Korea, South Korea reopen maritime communication channel Posted: 30 Jun 2018 08:30 PM PDT North and South Korea reopened a maritime communication channel on Sunday, with vessels from the two countries making radio contact for the first time in a decade, South Korea's Defence Ministry said in a statement. A North Korean patrol boat responded immediately when the South Korean Navy contacted it via an international radio channel at 9 a.m. Sunday in the western sea, normalizing the maritime communication channel for the first time in 10 years, according to the ministry. |

Mexico elections: Who is Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, the left-wing rebel tipped to take power? Posted: 01 Jul 2018 07:50 AM PDT Commentators say the former Mexico City mayor, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador – known as 'Amlo' – would inject a new dose of nationalism into government – something that could heighten tensions in already testy US-Mexican relations. Mr Lopez Obrador has led opinion polls throughout the campaign in an election marred by violence, with 130 candidates and political workers killed since September. If he ousts the ruling centrist Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), he would be the first leftist in decades to take the presidency. |

Gay activist attacked in Ukraine ahead of pride march Posted: 01 Jul 2018 08:03 AM PDT Unidentified assailants have attacked a gay activist in central Ukraine ahead of a gay pride parade he was helping prepare, LGBT rights activists said on Sunday. Borys Zolotchenko was severely beaten by a group of around 10 men in the centre of the industrial city Kryvyi Rig late Saturday, Gay Alliance Ukraine said. As a result of the attack, Zolotchenko was hospitalised, with Gay Alliance Ukraine releasing a picture of him with scratches on his face. |
Rhode Island sues major oil companies over climate change Posted: 02 Jul 2018 11:01 AM PDT Rhode Island on Monday sued several major oil companies, including Exxon Mobil Corp and BP plc, accusing them of contributing to climate change that is damaging infrastructure and coastal communities in the state. The lawsuit announced by Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Kilmartin was the first by a state seeking to hold oil companies responsible for costs associated with climate change and followed similar cases by several local governments nationally. The lawsuit alleged that various oil companies had created a public nuisance in the state and failed to adequately warn customers, consumers and regulators about the risks posed by their products. |
Justice Clarence Thomas leading the US supreme court? A scary thought Posted: 02 Jul 2018 04:55 AM PDT Perhaps because of this, his extreme, rightwing jurisprudence has not been seen as very influential, unlike that of his ideological clone, the late Antonin Scalia or the court's newcomer, Neil Gorsuch. Already, this most recent court term has been a debacle for the liberal justices who, according to Adam Liptak of the New York Times, largely failed to peel off Kennedy to form a majority in the major cases. Already there is much speculation that Donald Trump's nominee to replace Kennedy will be, if confirmed, the decisive vote to overturn Roe v Wade, the decision legalizing a woman's right to have an abortion. |

North Korea appeals to China for economic help as it reopens radio channel with the South Posted: 01 Jul 2018 04:29 AM PDT North and South Korea reopened a maritime communication channel on Sunday, with vessels from the two countries making radio contact for the first time in a decade, South Korea's Defence Ministry said in a statement. A North Korean patrol boat responded immediately when the South Korean Navy contacted it via an international radio channel at 9 am Sunday in the western sea, normalizing the maritime communication channel for the first time in 10 years, according to the ministry. The move showed the two Koreas were "taking practical steps" to uphold agreements made on April 27 when their leaders decided to defuse military tensions in a gradual manner, an official from the ministry said. It was also on Sunday reported that Kim Jong-un, the North Korean leader, has appealed to China's Xi Jinping to help end sanctions against Pyongyang following his landmark summit with US President Donald Trump. Kim made the request during his third meeting with Mr Xi in Beijing last month, and the Chinese president promised to do his "utmost" to satisfy it, the Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper said. "We are feeling great pain due to economic sanctions. Now that we have concluded the US-North Korea summit in success, I want (China) to work toward early lifting of the sanctions," Kim reportedly told Mr Xi, according to the newspaper. Kim chose Beijing - his main economic patron and diplomatic protector - for his first official foreign trip in March and met Mr Xi again in May in the northeastern port city of Dalian. Timeline of Kim Jong-un in Beijing In recent months the Cold War-era allies have sought to repair ties strained by Pyongyang's nuclear tests and Beijing's support of subsequent UN sanctions. Kim asked Mr Xi to help ease the sanctions that have crippled North Korea's economy, and urged China to back Pyongyang in its denuclearisation talks with Washington, the report said. Mr Xi in turn told Kim he "actively supports North Korea's reform and opening-up and will proactively cooperate with issues associated with the efforts", according to the Yomiuri. He also urged North Korea to "continue (its) consultations with China" as it negotiates with the United States, the report said. |

The home of those who died is above a grocery store the family owned in the Burari district in a northern part of Delhi. |
More Syrians leave Lebanon for home Posted: 01 Jul 2018 06:42 AM PDT Several dozen Syrian refugees left Lebanon for neighbouring Syria on Sunday as part of returns coordinated between both countries, an AFP reporter and authorities said. A total of 42 Syrians returned voluntarily from Lebanon through the Masnaa crossing to areas in Syria, Lebanese authorities said. A Lebanese coordinator said they were headed for areas including Moadmiyet al-Sham, a suburb of Damascus where the regime retook control from rebels in October 2016. |

(AP) — In a June 28 story about an attack at a newspaper in Annapolis, The Associated Press erroneously reported that the suspect arrested in the shooting had mutilated his fingers in an apparent attempt to make it harder for police to identify him. That report was based on initial information given to law enforcement authorities, which has since been corrected. While the suspect was identified using facial recognition technology, his fingers were not mutilated. |
Exclusive: Leftist seen as Mexico's next president after massive win - exit poll Posted: 01 Jul 2018 06:08 PM PDT Mexican leftist Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador is likely to be the country's next president, according to an exit poll by polling firm Parametria that pointed to a massive victory for him in Sunday's election. The exit poll showed the former Mexico City mayor winning between 53 percent and 59 percent of votes. Ricardo Anaya, who leads a left-right alliance, trailed Lopez Obrador in second place, with between 19 and 25 percent of votes, the poll found. |
Fury sparked after 11-year-old Thai girl married to Malaysian man Posted: 01 Jul 2018 09:57 AM PDT The marriage of a Malaysian man with a 11-year-old Thai girl has sparked outrage in the Muslim majority country with one activist Sunday labelling the groom a "child predator". Malaysian Muslims below the age of 16 are allowed to marry if they obtain the permission of a religious court. But the country's women and families ministry said there was no record of religious authorities approving the union, which took place last month across the border in Thailand's largely Muslim far south. "Our officers have gone to the house and met the girl's mother. We are waiting for more reports before deciding on the next course of action," deputy prime minister Wan Azizah Wan Ismail was quoted as saying by the Sunday Star newspaper. The 41-year-old husband could be jailed for six months if he married without permission. Malaysian activists have called for law reform to end child marriage, which they said was widespread among the country's Muslim population. Some 16,000 Malaysian girls below the age of 15 are already married, advocates claim. "Marrying a 11-year-old girl is like the behaviour of a child predator or paedophile," child activist Syed Azmi Alhabshi said. Mr Alhabshi said the man was a prosperous trader and already married to two women while the girl's parents were impoverished rubber farmers. Muslim men are allowed to marry up to four wives in Malaysia. The United Nations children's agency Unicef said it was "outraged" by the incident. "It is shocking and unacceptable. Unicef... calls on the government to make good its manifesto promise to ban child marriage," said the agency's Malaysia representative Marianne Clark-Hattingh. |
Merkel, rebel minister agree migrant deal to avert govt crisis Posted: 02 Jul 2018 03:25 PM PDT German Chancellor Angela Merkel reached a deal Monday on migration with her rebellious interior minister, Horst Seehofer, defusing a bitter row that had threatened her government. Both sides hammered out "a truly good compromise ... after a tough struggle and difficult days," Merkel said, adding that it involved setting up holding and processing centres for asylum seekers near German borders. "We now have a clear agreement how to prevent illegal immigration across the Austrian-German border in future," said Seehofer, whose CSU is the traditional Bavaria state ally of Merkel's CDU party. |

Thousands march in Hong Kong as restrictions grow Posted: 01 Jul 2018 04:21 AM PDT Protesters marched through central Hong Kong on Sunday in one of the city's major annual pro-democracy rallies as organisers said the event was coming under unprecedented pressure from authorities. Beijing has become increasingly intolerant of signs of dissent in semi-autonomous Hong Kong since massive pro-democracy rallies in 2014 brought parts of the city to a standstill and led to the emergence of activists demanding independence from China. Hong Kong has rights unseen on the mainland, including freedom of expression, but there are concerns those liberties are now under threat from a repressive Beijing and a loyalist local government. |
VW considering revolutionary new take on its iconic Beetle: report Posted: 02 Jul 2018 06:26 AM PDT It probably came as something of a shock to a lot of people when Volkswagen announced there will be no direct replacement for the current second-generation of its iconic Beetle, which has now been on sale since 1997 when it was revived as a front-wheel drive model. It's likely the new Beetle would be built on VW's flexible electric MEB vehicle architecture that will be underpinning its upcoming new ID range. The current Beetle is the second-generation of the car after the nameplate was revived in 1997, and although they are still on sale, production will end next year and Volkswagen has already stopped taking orders for new Beetles. |
