Turkey's Erdogan says Khashoggi recordings 'appalling', shocked Saudi intelligence Posted: 13 Nov 2018 05:16 AM PST Khashoggi, a critic of de facto Saudi ruler Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, was killed in Saudi Arabia's Istanbul consulate on Oct. 2 in a hit which Erdogan says was ordered at the "highest levels" of the Saudi government. Six weeks after Khashoggi's death, Turkey is trying to keep up pressure on Prince Mohammed and has released a stream of evidence that undermined Riyadh's early denials of involvement. Prine Mohammed won support on Tuesday from U.S. National Security Adviser John Bolton, who said he did not think recordings of the killing shared by Turkey implicated the young crown prince. |

Despite restrictions, digital spending hits record in US midterms Posted: 13 Nov 2018 05:59 AM PST Even as online platforms tightened rules for political ads, digital spending set new records in the 2018 US midterm elections and appears poised for further growth in 2020. Digital media campaign spending rose 2,400 percent from the 2014 midterms to $1.8 billion, roughly 20 percent of the total $8.9 billion in ad spending, according to preliminary estimates from the research firm Borrell Associates. Online spending, much of it on social networks like Facebook, has been a significant factor in campaigns for a decade, but tighter rules imposed by digital giants in the wake of the 2016 election could have curbed some of that growth. |

With the launch of a declaration entitled the 'Paris call for trust and security in cyberspace', French President Emmanuel Macron is hoping to revive efforts to regulate cyberspace after the last round of United Nations negotiations failed in 2017. The Paris call was initially pushed for by tech companies but was redrafted by French officials to include work done by U.N. experts in recent years. |

"I'll visit the border tomorrow," Mattis said before the start of a meeting with his Qatari counterpart. Exclusive: Britain's Hunt sees prospect for Yemen talks, news on Khashoggi inquiry Posted: 12 Nov 2018 04:39 PM PST Following meetings in Riyadh with the Saudi king and crown prince - the main proponent of Saudi military intervention in Yemen - Hunt also said he anticipated "rapid progress" in bringing to justice those responsible for last month's murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. "I was led to believe that certainly the legal processes are going to be starting very soon indeed and we should hear something about that quite shortly," Hunt told Reuters in an interview. Hunt's trip, which included a meeting in the United Arab Emirates with Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, comes as Riyadh, already under scrutiny for civilian deaths in Yemen air strikes, is facing global criticism and potential sanctions over Khashoggi's killing inside its Istanbul consulate on Oct. 2. |
